LADIES’ GOLF AT HAWERA

ELEVEN GAMES 18 HOLES OR MORE SEMI-FINALS AND FINALS TO-DAY. An extraordinary number of close games was played in the South Taranaki ladies’ golf championship tournament at Hawera yesterday when match play was commenced. The first two rounds of the championship and the Fairfield handicap were played, leaving the semifinals and finals for to-day. Of the 24 matches played yesterday 11 did not finish before the 18th. green. Six finished there but five went even further, three to the 19th and one to the 20th, while Mrs. Knewstubb and Mrs. Mcßae finished an unusually long struggle on the 21st green. The best round yesterday was a gross 82 returned by Mrs. Cook. She did the first nine holes in bogey figures, 40. Results of the match play are: — CHAMPIONSHIP. Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Quin, Mrs. McGarry and Miss Bell and Mrs. Valintine and Miss Riddle were also 2 up, but were eliminated on a count back. ARARATA NEWS. DISTRICT WELCOME HOME. A welcome home was tendered Mr. and Mrs. A. Alexander in the Ararata hall on Wednesday night. Table gay with spring flowers were set in the main hall. Mr. A. G. Larcom presided and there was a lengthy, toast list. The toasts were: Our Guests (Mr. Larcom—Mr. A. Alexander), The Bride’s Parents (Mr. Corkill—Mv. T. Winlcs), The Bridegroom’s Parents) (Mr. N. Cocker, speaking as one of the early settlers, gave some very interesting reminiscences and said how pleased he and his wife were to be guests at a function in their old district. COMMITTEE’S PLANS PROGRESSING A meeting of the Okaiawa School committee was held on Tuesday, when good progress was reported in the arrangements for the celebration of the school jubilee. Mr. Wards stated that the Hawera Pipe Band would take part. Mr. Meuli said that he had arranged for suitable street illuminations, also for flags and the parking of cars. A report was received stating that the ladies' committee had met and put in hand the preparations for the afternoon tea. The ladies of the district had agreed to contribute a basket. The chairman was empowered to make inquiries regarding a jubilee cake. A number of guarantors had offered to stand in to the extent of 10s each in the event of a loss. GENERAL ITEMS. Winner of Cycling Trophy. J. Bourke won the Cambria rose bowl for the Hawera Ramblers’ Cycle Club’s season with 46 points. Points gained by other riders were: B. F, Flintoff 34, H. Wills 27, M. Jones 24, G. Flintoff 16, H. T. Putt 16, J. Dombroski 8, A. Kennedy 7, H. Radford 4. Accident at Nonnanby. A gash in the head was sustained by Mrs. F. Pidgeon, Normanby, when she slipped’ on the town hall steps at the Women’s Institute function on Wednesday night. ,• .. . 13 Down on Bogey. Thirteen down on the bogey was the score returned by one pair in the fourball bogey competition at the Hawera ladies golf tourrament yesterday. Bankruptcies at Hawera. There were two bankruptcies in the Hawera district last month, as compared with one in August last year. Basketball Dance. The Wellington Basketball Association’s representative team spent Wednesday night at Hawera as the guests of the Hawera Technical High School Old Pupils’ Associations at a complimentary dance in the scout hall. There was a large attendance, including members from other South Taranaki basketball clubs. Supper was provided by the old girls, and Ray Wills’ orchestra played the music, with an extra by Miss M. Guy. Mr. L. Hulbert was 'master of ceremonies. Legion of Frontiersmen’s Dance. The Ohawe Troop, Legion of Frontiersmen, held a dance at Fraser Road on Wednesday. Music was played by Mrs. Attrill, with extras by the Misses N. and D. Sanderson and Mr. A. L. Campbell. Mr. H. Briggs was master of ceremonies. Special dances were won as follow: Monte Carlo, Mrs. Searle and Mr. Jones; statue, Miss Taylor and Mr. Bloor; spot, Miss Collins and Mr. B. Bloor. Indoor Sports Contests. Contests at billiards, table tennis and bagatelle were played between the Hawera Fire Brigade and post office staffs this week. The brigade won each event though the scores were close.
