DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA

CRITICISM OF NAVAL AIM. SUGGESTION OF WAR COUNCIL. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright Sydney, Aug. 31. Brigadier-General Lloyd at the Accountants Society’s luncheon urged the immediate formation of a war council to co-ordinate Australian defence. A navy took a long time to build and it must not be the plaything of politics, he said. The Air Force, the eyes of both the Navy and the Army and a tremendous - power in bombing- strength, should be supported to the fullest possible extent. Replying to criticism of the Australian Navy by a senior officer at Sydney the London Morning Post’s naval expert says: “The cruisers Canberra and Australia cannot be described as either out of date or miserable, but there is no blinking the fact that the present Australian Navy is of little use for defence of the vast continent. The only effective defence would be minefields and ocean-going submarines enabling a strong distant patrol to be maintained. Both arms would require the support of surface ships.”
