BASKETBALL AT HAWERA

WELLINGTON WINS BOTH GAMES. CLEVER PASSING AND FOOTWORK. Tire Wellington Basketball Association’s representative team "won both its matches at Hawera yesterday, defeating the country team 10—5 and the town team 14—9. Bright and fast basketball was played in both games and the visitors excelled in the sureness of their passes and the cleverness of their footwork. The teams were:— Country: D. Good (captain), H. Hobday, F. Gamlin, B. Seed, B. Green, N. Rowlands, Z. Cleaver, A. Collins, R. Winthrop. Town: R. George (captain), P. Murray, M. Nicholas, E. Reid, F. Wills, Z. Tooker, J. Thomas, P. Robertson, P. Sharp. The visitors were entertained at the Carlton after the second match. TEMPERANCE UNION WORK, HAWERA MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday, Mrs. Hayward presiding. Plans were put forward by several members for helping the work of the union. Mrs. Lister,. who celebrated her SCtih birthday recently, was presented with a posy made by Mrs. Curtis. A letter of sympathy is to be sent to Mrs. L. J. Williams, who is in hospital. Songs by Miss Elsie Hartmann, recitations by Miss Florence Sharpe and violin , solos by Miss Doris Hawkens were given. AccomH paniments were played by Mrs. Hartmann and Miss Rita Hawkens. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs. Collins was hostess. HAWERA FIRE BRIGADE. FREDERICKS WINS ONE-MAN EVENT The Hawera Fira Brigade one-man motor event was won by Fireman. H. Fredericks, who has only recently joined the brigade. Details are:— H., Fredericks: 36 3-55.; handicap 35.; finished time, 33 3-ss. C. Perrett: 415.; handicap, 25.; finished time, 395. N. Page was elected a member of tire New Zealand Legion committee at Hawera on Tuesday night, not, as was published, Mr. Page. Eleventh Court Adjournment Stating that he had difficulty in getting into touch with his client, a solicitor in tire Hawera Court yesterday asked for an "adjournment, by the Court. “You have had 10 Court adjournments already in this case,” commented Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., “Oh well, I’ll make this the last.” Avoiding a Late Start, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., yesterday indicated that he was disinclined to start a special fixture at the Hawera Court late this morning as he had a fixture at War nganui to-day. Mr. R. J. O’Dea said the solicitor on the other side had to come from Waitara, which made it difficult for him to arrive at 9.30 a.m. “Let him start this afternoon,” replied Mr. Salmon. “He can charge it up to his client.” Woman Car Driver Fined. Isobel Baker, charged in the Hawera Court before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., yesterday with negligent driving on August 10,' pleaded guilty and was fined £2 and costs 10s. The police story’ of the accident, in which her car and a motor lorry were involved, was that she had tried to pass the lorry on the incorrect Side when the lorry turned out of an intersection. Mr. A. K. North said Miss Baker’s parents’ car had been considerably damaged and the fine would also fall on them. The magistrate said he would endorse the license and if anything, similar happened again he would cancel it. To Promote Efficiency. A handsome cup has been presented to the Patea infantry unit by Mr. F. W. Locker for' annual competition for the most efficient all round soldier. Mr.- F. W. Locker won a similar trophy at Patea before the war, the honour being keenly sought and doing much to promote the efficiency of the unit and the individual. Mr. Locker is confident that the cup he has donated will contribute to the efficiency of the local company, which is showing exceptional zeal and keenness under the training of Lieutenant R. W. Haddow.
