HAWKE’S BAY WINS 36 TO ELEVEN. BAY OF PLENTY THRASHED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Tauranga, Last Night. Hawke’s Bay defeated Bay of Plenty in a Rugby Union match here to-day by 36 points to 11. The weather was fine and the field excellent. Bay of Plenty had to force within a minute and Palmer scored an unconverted try for Hawke’s Bay a few minutes later. Another try was added by Grant before Bay of Plenty livened and Kopu registered a goal from a penalty. Good forward play found Hawke's Bay pressing and P. Smith touched down from a forwards’ passing movement. The try was not converted. Even but interesting play was capped by Bay of Plenty; a passing rush ended in M. Howell’s scoring at the goal after a brilliant run. P. Howell converted. Hawera (Hawke’s Bay) broke away in great style and passed to Apsey, who scored. The kick again failed. Bay of Plenty backs played well but Mahoney sent his backs away for Lequesne to score in a good position. The kick Was successful. At half-time Hawke’s Bay led 17—8.
Even play characterised the opening stages of the second spell, the sides attacking alternatively. After 20 minutes Reaney took a neat pass in a handy position and scored at the goal posts. The try was converted. From a scrum Mahoney set his backs away. Bradley ran through the opposition and scored another converted try for Hawke’s Bay. Hawke’s Bay maintained the pressure, Bradley again scoring a try, which was not converted. Another passing rush ended in a try by Smith. A penalty close to the goal gave Bay of Plenty another three points. Smith made a great run down the line and again scored for Hawke’s Bay.
