WEST END SCHOOL BALL

A FANCY DRESS SPECTACLE. FOUR HUNDRED SMALL DANCERS. The annual ball of the West End School was held in the Agricultural Hall, New Plymouth, last night. Beneath the yellow and black decorations used by the Star Football Club a few days ago about 400 children in fancy dress made a splendid spectacle. Practically every child wore a costume of some kind, many of them of elaborate or ingenious designs, and there was the usual assortment of princes and princesses, cowboys and Indians, pirates, sailors, soldiers, fairies, pierrots and pierrettes. The proceedings commenced with a grand march that was amazing for the way in which its many intricacies were faithfully performed by thv hundreds of children taking part. This was followed by the Lancers and other old-time and folk dances by the senior pupils, and class dances by the juniors, the upper and lower school alternately taking the floor.

The skilful manner in which the children performed was the subject of favourable comment by the large number of parents present and was a tribute to the headmaster (Mr. W. A. Brown), who had general supervision of the gathering, and to Messrs A. Barns (master of ceremonies) and C. N. Nicholls, the Misses Taylor, Hogg and Downs (seniors) and Miss Kirton, Mrs. Ruff and the Misses Mee and Anderson (juniors), all of whom had co-operated in training the young dancers. ■ The general organisation of the ball was in the hands of Mr. C. Berg (chairman), H. J. Abram (secretary) and other members of the school committee. Mrs. Berg (chairwoman) and a committee of ladies supervised the supper, which was served to the children at 9.30.
