AUCKLAND HARBOUR BRIDGE
ADVANCING THE PROJECT. MR. A. HARRIS FOR AUSTRALIA. A development in connection with the Auckland harbour bridge scheme is the announcement that Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, will leave for Sydney and Melbourne by the Wanganella this afternoon, as representative of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Company, Limited, to further negotiations now in progress. The following statement has been issued by the company: “Some weeks ago the company announced that, subject to certain conditions and adjustments, the sum of £1,500,000 is available in London to build the bridge. Since that time the board of directors has been continuously engaged in carrying on negotiations to meet those requirements. “During normal times little difficulty would have been met, but, in spite of tire present abnormal times, the board has achieved a large measure of success. In fact, developments have gone so far that it has been deemed advisable to ask Mr. A. Harris, M.P., to proceed to Australia, as representative, of the company, to further the negotiations. This action is rendered necessary owing to the fact that inquiries from England indicate the probability of certain supplies needed for the bridge being required from the Commonwealth. “Mr. Harris has willingly placed his services at the disposal of the company, and, in view of the early opening of Parliament, will leave for Sydney and Melbourne on Friday afternoon. During Mr. Harris’ absence from New Zealand, Mr. A. J. Stallworthy, who has already done much in furtherance of the bridge project, has kindly offered to look after the interests of the Waitemata electorate.”. ... ' - 1
