MANGOREI DAIRY CHAIRMAN

TRIBUTE TO MR. GEORGE MARSH. LONG SERVICE AS DIRECTOR. That he was severing his long connection with the directorate, leaving his colleagues the memory of an honest man who always played the part, was the tribute paid to Mr. George Marsh at the annual meeting of the Mangorei Dairy Company yesterday by Mr. C. H. Sorenson, who moved that the company place on record appreciation of the services of Mr. Marsh. The enthusiasm with which the motion was received showed that the suppliers recognised its -aptness, Mr. Marsh had been a director for 28 years and chairman for the past eight years, Mr. Sorenson said. He had always given every consideration to the business of the company, and as a result of his management it had prospered. When Mr. Marsh, became chairman the production of the company was 260 tons, and there was doubt whether it would be able to continue business. To-day the company possessed a concrete factory that would long stand to the memory of Mr. Marsh.

In acknowledging, Mr. Marsh said that apart from his farming, his whole time had been centred in the conduct of the company’s affairs. There had been many reverses. The first was the secession of the Kaimiro company, which took about a third of the company’s Supply. Later the company was hit right and left by proprietary concerns, and to counteract that the company decided to accept suppliers without their becoming shareholders; the scheme proved successful. Owing to the increasing. supply and the cost of repairing the factory the directors were faced with the necessity for rebuilding. Mr. Marsh considered the action then taken was one of the wisest the company had done, though considerable opposition was encountered. The new factory had a capacity of 1000 tons and he thought that in a few years it would be working up to its full capacity. To-day the factory was practically free of debt and he did not think any of the suppliers had ever felt paying for it. Mr. Marsh was severing his connection with the directorate ■ without regret ,as he was satisfied he had done his best in the interests of the company.
