BRILLIANT ANNUAL BALL

STRATFORD RUGBY CLUB SUCCESS. NOVEL DECORATIVE DESIGN. It is a long time since the Stratford Rugby Club came into being and every year someone has had to face the task of decorating the hall for the annual ball. The club is jealous of the reputation of its yearly social fixture and demands a combination of originality, taste and pleasing ideas in the decorative scheme. Whoever undertakes to conform to those conditions is confronted by no mean problem but Mrs. R. Fryday surpassed herself this year and met all the requirements with something in hand. Like everything that attains distinction in decorative class, the scheme claimed simplicity as its keynote but by that very simplicity established the “something different” which decorators often strive for yet fail to achieve. The basic design was a large fourpointed star with two of the points red and two black. The central piece was a square of trellis work in black, from which hung a cluster of coloured balloons. At each corner of the trellis was a Chinese lantern and at the points were hanging baskets. The four sets of streamers, red dnd black, led from the sides of the square to points on the walls. The diagonals were strings of lycopodium flecked with artificial roses and they each supported three lanterns. A trellis work in green relieved the walls, which also had fem sprays and lanterns at intervals. The trellis work was continued across the front of the stage. Bunches of flax and native foliage enhanced the sides. Assisting Mrs. Fryday with the decorations were Mesdames F. J. Nolan, W. Robinson, G. D. O’Leary and A. Hunter, Misses M. Malone, Z. Masters, M. Lyons and H. Bremner. Mrs. A. Yamdley was responsible for the decoration of the supper tables and she produced delicacy of design and admirable blending of colours. Looped from rafter to rafter were streamers of orange, lemon and mauve; fems and bamboos disguised the walls. Polyanthus, primroses, Iceland poppies, jonquils and mimosa in bowls and vases 1 gave a festive and appropriate air to the ' tables. The supper itself was a feather in the cap of the committee, Mesdames W. H. H. Young (chairwoman), F. Bowler, L. J. Furrie, D. J. Malone, F. J. Nolan, H. M. Good, A. Coleman, C. C. W. Haselden and R. R. Tyrer. 1 The general organisation was the pro- 1 vin’ce of the secretary, Mr. F. J. Nolan. 1 The Ambassador’s dance band played 1 the music. The masters of ceremonies < were Messrs. R. Fryday, D. Young and J. ’ Young. J MEN SATISFIED AT CAMP. * — L WHANGAMOMONA ACTIVITIES. * . 1 The cookhouse at the single men s camp is almost ready for service again.
