73,000 ON RELIEF SCHEMES

BIG INCREASE SHOWN IN JULY;

Unemployed on the register at August 5, or transferred to schemes other than scheme No, 5, numbered .78,091. This figure shows an increase of 3057 compared with July 8. Of the 78,091 men 5125 were ineligible for relief for various reasons, leaving 72,966 a charge on the board’s funds. These were engaged as follows: Scheme No. 5 (excluding gold prospecting) 49,219, subsidised employment on farms-11,566, land improvement and development 1630, highways and backblock roads 1184, afforestation 1232, subsidised employment at standard rates of pay by the Public Works Department 1828, building subsidy 2411, gold prospecting 3744, miscellaneous (subsidised employment various industries) 102.
It is estimated that at least 40,000 men are engaged on work of a definite reproductive development nature in connection with primary industries. The total numbers shown since the present form of returns was adopted have been:—
