ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

MATCH WITH WANGANUI TARANAKI TEAM DOES WELL. BOYS FOR SCHOOL TOURNAMENT.

(By

“Centre-half.”)

The Taranaki representative team is to be congratulated on its win. by a goal against Wanganui at Wanganui, on Saturday. Every player rose to the occasion and some sparkling play was witnessed by a good crowd of spectators, who were on their toes throughout the game. The only goal was scored in the first 10, minutes by J. Hill, Taranaki’s outside left. Thereafter there were some exciting periods, both goals being visited in quick succession. Both goal-keepers cleared splendidly. Atkinson, in the Taranaki goal, played a brilliant game, his anticipation being wonderful to watch. Wood and McKay, tire backs, played with great understanding. Wood proved himself a polished player, his work in the second half being particularly clever. Ashley, Parkinson (capt.) and F. Roper were a solid half-back line. Ashley was a great acquisition to the Taranaki team. He played a sound and tireless game the whole time. Parkinson was a tower of strength; he bottled Heath, the Wanganui crack centre forward, very effectively and his shots at goal from 30 yards out were a revelation. He deserves great credit for the manner in which he handled his team. F. Roper, who came in at the last miniite, played a robust game notwithstanding leg trouble and is to-be congratulated. _ . The forwards, ably led by Peter Gardner, received solid' support from Hill, who played an ideal.game at outside left; his centring was splendid and he always had the Wanganui defenders non-plussed. Andy Smith, on the right wing, who was called on just.prior to the departure of the team from New Plymouth, because Wilson was unable to travel, played well. Miljar suffered somewhat through being out of position. Ibbotson completed a good forward line. . The players on both sides are, to be congratulated on the excellent spirit in which the game was played. It was the cleanest representative game the writer has seen and will live long in the memory of all those who saw it, The referee, Mr. Langslow, is deserving of the highest praise, his control being excellent. A special word of. thanks is due to the Wanganui Football Association for its generous hospitality. The association entertained both teams at dinner and afterwards the visitors were guests at the Scottish Society’s dance, at which there was an attendance of between 350 and 400. The general arrangements were excellent and the Taranaki team and its supporters can express thanks to those responsible for a memorable visit. It is understood the next triangular cup contest will be on Saturday between Manawatii and Palmerston North. Boys’ Competitions. Following are the tables of points, to date, in the Taranaki schools competitions:—
