PILLAGING FROM RAILWAY

CHRISTCHURCH MAN GAOLED,

COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE.

By Telegraph—Press Association.

Christchurch, Aug. 15.

“Men who pillage goods should be sent to gaol without the option of a fine. If importers-cannot trust railway employees what will happen to the trade of the country?” This comment was made by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., when sentencing Joseph Fearon, aged 44, a labourer, to seven days’ imprisonment for the theft of two pots of face cream valued at 2s 10s, the property of the Railway Department. ■ The. police stated that the goods were missed from the railway sheds and a search was made of Fearon’s home. “I would be failing in my duty if I did not'impress upon these men that they cannot do this kind of thing without meeting the utmost rigour of the law,” said’ Mr. Mosley.
