DARK FOR 100 YEARS

“LIGHTHOUSE” WITH NO LAMPS. For over 25 years Captain Timby Sparks, keeper of the West Lighthouse at the mouth of the River Nene, Lincolnshire, has been waiting for the lamps to be installed. Tho East and West Lighthouses were bqilt on the shores of the Wash over a hundred years ago, and although they are marked on the British Admiralty charts not a beam of light has ever shone from either of them.

The “darkhouse keeper,” as Mr. Sparks is known to sailors all over the world, has seen 50 years’ service between these mysterious towers.

“Before I took over my present job I was in the East Lighthouse, but the Customs occupy that now,” he says. “During the day I am employed as a river foreman, and although I am over 70 I still think I shall live to see the day when I can- trim my lamps.”
