OHAWE SURF CLUB FORMED

KEEN INTEREST IN LIFE-SAVING. LINKING WITH SURF ASSOCIATION. The Ohawe Surf Club, which has been formed at Hawera, is an illustration of the increasing interest in South Taranaki in life-saving work. The new body will affiliate with the Royal Life-Saving Society and the Taranaki Surf Association. Some' years ago there was a lifesaving club with headquarters at Ohawe but it did not function' very actively and eventually to all intents and purposes disbanded. With the great improvement of the beach in recent years and the success in competitive events of Hawera swimmers interest quickened again, and last year two life-saving teams were formed. These gained useful experience while engendering a good deal of keenness. Excellent work in a double rescue by a member also focussed attention on this phase of swiming so the surf section of the Hawera Swimming Club decided to form a surf, club.

The officers of the new club are: Patron, Mr. J. E. Campbell; president, Mr. W. J. Claringbold; vice-presidents, Mr. P. O. Veale, the president of the swimming club (Mr. W. A. Spragg) and the chairman of the Ohawe Beach Improvement Society; secretary, Mr. M. R. Nelson; club captain, Mr. A. J. Ryan; committee, Messrs. G. S. Anderson, M. Good and C. Dowdle; medical officers, Drs. W. M. Thomson and J. Caimey; auditor, Mr. J. S. Tarrant; delegates to Surf Association, Messrs. Claringbold and Nelson.

The club intends working in co-opera-tion with the Hawera Swimming Club and the Ohawe Beach Improvement Society. RECORD TESTING SEASON. SOUTH TARANAKI INCREASE. Record numbers of cows will be tested by the South Taranaki Herd-Testing Association this season. Last year’s figure is eclipsed by 2300 in the total of 8000, and 135 herds will be tested. The association will employ five men fully all the season as there will be five groups. Last year there were four full-time men and one part-time. The greatest increase in cows under test is shown in areas more or less on the fringe of the district, Whakamara, Ohangai, Ararata and along Eltham Road. On the plains membership has been universally maintained and in places increased, but not to the extent anticipated. PERSONAL. Mr. J. H. Fletcher, postmaster at Ha-j wera, has entered hospital. Mrs, Jane Beamish, a pioneer resident of South Taranaki, has died at Wellington at the age of 84 years.
