COLLAPSE OF WEST INDIES ENGLAND WINS BY INNINGS AND 17. WICKET AFFECTED BY DAMPNESS. HEADLEY AND BARROW STRUCK. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 12.55 a.m. London, Aug. 15 Ten minutes’ play to-day sufficed for England to gain a hollow victory in the final test against West Indies. The match was a triumph for Clark and Marriott. Marriott, a schoolmaster, aged 38, was playing in his first test. He is unable regularly to appear in first-class cricket. Clark enhanced his reputation by the deadliest in-swingers which straightened out after leaving the pitch. Twelve thousand saw West Indies utterly collapse yesterday on a wicket apparently affected by overnight dampness. In reply to England’s 312 West Indies in the first innings made ,100 and, following on, lost eight for 190 at stumps. Clark and Nichols made the ball bump awkwardly. Headley was struck four times on the body and Barrow was hit on the arm. Clark secured the first three wickets, two of which were the results of catches at forward short leg by Bakewell, who stood almost at the end of the bat. Marriott, whose peculiar medium-paced delivery conceals the break, cleverly accounted for Headley, and the tail-enders showed no capacity to deal with him. ' The West Indies first innings ended in under two hours. Following on, Roach and Barrow scored rapidly off the fast bowlers. The first wicket fell at 77, but when Headley again failed to get going 4 the bowlers had the upper hand. At one stage only eight mins were added in half an hour. Stumps were drawn with 22 runs needed to save an innings defeat. The scores are: — ENGLAND. First innings 1....... >312 WEST INDIES. First Innings.
