TARIKI DISTRICT NEWS
MARDI GRAS AND EUCHRE. The committee of the town candidate in the queen carnival (Miss Illa Bourke) held a dance and euchre party in the Tariki Hall last week. There was only a fair attendance. Those present spent a very enjoyable evening. Excellent dance music was supplied by the Royal Albert Dance Orchestra. Miss Norcross and Mr. T. Wright played extras. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. Robertson and partner (Inglewood). There were 9J tables occupied in the euchre room, the winners being Mrs. Adlam (Midhirst) 1, Mrs. L. Loveridge (Tariki) 2, Mr. T. Rumball (Rugby Road) 1, Mr. Murfitt (Inglewood) 2. Supper was served in the supper room by the ladies’ committee.
Mr. Gush, in the absence of the Rev. J. C. W. Mutter (Inglewood) introduced the candidate, and on behalf .of the committee' thanked those who had attended or helped in any way to further the interests of the candidate. Methodist Church Social.
The final of a series of socials was held in the Tariki Methodist Church on Monday, the Rev. J. Utting (Inglewood) presiding over a good attendance. Visitors were present from Inglewood, Durham, Norfolk and Croydon Roads. A splendid recitation was given by Mrs. Porter and a sketch by the Misses Trimble brought forth merited applause. Games were also played, controlled by Mr. Utting, both young and old showing skill. Misses Logan and Therkleson were accompanists. A collection was taken up on behalf of the trust funds. The ladies provided an excellent supper. These socials have been beneficial both to the trust and the missions and have been the means of bringing the congregation and friends together.
Personal and General Mr. J. Cowley, who had the misfortune to break two small bones in his leg while playing League in the Taranaki v. Auckland match, is progressing satisfactorily in the New Plymouth Hospital. Mr. Taylor, Surrey Road, who has been in ill-health for a considerable time, is making slow but satisfactory progress. The Tariki dairy factory is running every day and the supply is increasing rapidly. Owing to the inclement weather last Thursday the football and basketball matches arranged had to be postponed. The basketball match will be played on Thursday next. • Messrs T. Wright, H. Humphries and H. Gush will represent Tariki in the hockey match, New Plymouth v. Thursday Central Division, for the George and Doughty Cup to be played at Stratford next Saturday. Owing to counter-attractions the plain and fancy dress dance and euchre arranged for August 17 has been postponed until August 22.
