AMERICAN RUGBY TEAM

AN OFFER FROM STANFORD. * ■PROPOSED DOMINION VISIT.’ ■ The' proposal that a Rugby football team from Stanford University, California; should ’ visit New Zealand in 1934, was considered briefly by the Auckland University • College Council at a meeting on Monday, when the council received a copy of a letter on the matter sent to the New Zealand Rugby Union. The proposal was referred .to the Students’ Association. The letter, which was written by Mr. H. W. Maloney, director of minor sports at Stanford University, stated that in 1924 Mr. Maloney had visited Australia as coach and manager of the Stanford University tennis team. He now offered the suggestion that the university Rugby team should visit New Zealand and Australia in the winter season of 1934, leaving San Francisco about the middle of June. Hd would ask for nothing but a guarantee that the expenses be paid for, say, 20 players, a volunteer coach and a manager.

It was his. opinion the team would compare, favourably with the college teams he (saw. in Australia. The players were well, schooled. They were young, fast, heavy forwards, backed up •by very keen and “heady” backs. They were coached by J. Wylie, member of the AU Black team which visited the United States in 1913, and who had since entered into business in the vicinity of the university.
