HIGH SCHOOL OLD PUPILS’ BALL. CRICKET SHIELD PRESENTED. There was an attendance of over 300, including visitors from Stratford, Eltham, Patea and other towns and districts, at the 11th annual ball of the Hawera High School Old Girls’ and Old Boys’ Associations in the Winter Show buildings on Wednesday night. The hall was strikingly decorated with streamers of red, blue and gold, while the entrance from the lower hall was effectively lined with greenery. Wills’ Orchestra provided the music, with supper extras by Messrs. H. Barton, W. Barleyman and L. Pacey. Mr. R. P. Morrissey was master of ceremonies. Taranaki Cricket Association, presented the shield won by the Old Boys’ Cricket Club in the 1932-33 season. In the absence of the captain, Mr. H. Barker, Mr. G. Moloney accepted the shield. The ravages of 50 years on the wooden Hawera Borough Council Chambers are at present being combated by numbers of carpenters. An examination of the understructure of the building reveals the urgent necessity for the. work. All the piles intended to uphold the'building had rotted and the structure was resting on the ground. To put in concrete piles it was necessary to raise the chambers on jacks, and the front portions are still supported in this way. The building has not been painted for some years and as a result much of the outside boarding has rotted, necessitating the festoon of scaffolding which now clings to the walls for renovating purposes. Similar repairs are being effected to the bandroom and the library.
