FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS

HAY AND ENSILAGE ENTRIES. JUDGING IN TOKO DISTRICT. Messrs. J. M. Smith and C. Haynes, Agricultural Department, visited the Toko district on Monday and judged the entries in the hay and ensilage section of the farmers’ field competition. Though the weather was not favourable they were followed throughout ■, the day by a party of farmers. Twenty-two entries were judged—l 3 ensilage and nine hay stacks.

In- stack ensilage G. Harris headed the list with 92pts., J. Were being runner-up with 91i points. In hill-side stacks J. Corbett was the winner with 88A points, while in hay H. J. Kaye was the winner with,9oJ points and R. Kingan runnerup. with 89J points. Detailed results are:— Ensilage Stacks.

JUDGING AT OAKURA, , HIGH QUALITY CONCRETE SILO. Mr. Smith visited the Oakura district yesterday in continuation of the judging of the ensilage and hay. There was a good following of farmers of the district, including Messrs. H. 'Staveley (vice-pre--sident) and P. Telford (secretary) of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union. Of four concrete pits judged in the ensilage competition G. H. Bell was the, winner with 94£ pts., the points being equal to those of A. Alexander, Tikorangi, the highest so far judged in its class. Jans Bros, were runners-up with 92J pts. In hill-side stacks H. Staveley was the winner with the high score of 93J pts., the stack being remarkably free from waste, but losing in quality. Of seven haystacks Jans Bros, were the winners with 894 Pts., L. Brown and P. G. Knight being runners-up with 87 pts. The party was entertained at morning tea by Mr. and Mrs. H. Staveley, at
