ENTERTAINMENTS

REGENT THEATRE TO-NIGHT. “SILVER DOLLAR." The mad scramble for wealth by eager prospectors, their adventurous life in the lawless mining camps, their struggle to wrest riches from the soil, their days of starvation and untold hardships, their nights of wild revels in the gambling dens and dance halls, their subsequent building of cities and the state, their romances, their loves and scandals in their gradual evolution of some semblance of law and order, form the thrilling theme of “Silver Dollar,” now showing at the .Regent Theatre, New Plymouth. The play has for its central figure the most eccentric and wildly extravagant of all these characters, a prototype of Haw Tabor, who amassed untold wealth and swayed the destinies of a State as presiding officer of the Senate which held its impromptu meetings in a bar-room and passed laws to the accompaniment of the popping of champagne corks. His prodigality was the talk of a nation. Edward G. Robinson, the distinguished character actor, plays the principal role and Bebe Daniels and Aline McMahon head a talented supporting cast. The shorts include “Stuff on the Ball” (sporting film), “Hollywood on Parade” (revue), “Rambling Round Radio Row” (novelty), “Trouble Indemity” (featurette) and “Mediterranean Byways” (travelogue). EVERYBODY’S TO-DAY. .—. CHANGE OF PROGRAMME. A complete Arab town, such as is found in Northern Africa, was re-built in the Paramount British studios for the film “Insult,” Jan Fabricius’ famous play, which Harry Lachman directed at Elstree and which will be shown at Everybody’s Theatre, New Plymouth, to-day and to-morrow as sessions commencing at 2 and 7.45 p.m. Although much of the action of the story takes place amid dramatic military activities, there is a charming love story woven through the picture, romance being centred around the young and beautiful wife of the civil governor, played by Elizabeth Allan, who made such a hit in the previous Paramount success, “Service For Ladies.” Other members of the cast include Hugh Williams, Sam Livesey, John Gielgud, Sydney Fairbrother and Abraham Sofaer. “Insult” will be preceded by Australian Fox News, “Land of Our Fathers” (interest), Pathe British News and Paramount British News.
