TAXATION OF BREWERS
NEW ZEALAND EXPERIENCE. “MODIFICATION OF LAW DUE.” By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the annual meeting of New Zealand Breweries Ltd. the chairman, Dr. McEvedy, said Government taxes this year amounted to no less than 87.42 per cent, of the profits earned by the company. One might be allowed to express the hope that the experience of those countries where prohibition had been tried, coupled with the oft-times clearly expressed verdict of the people of New Zealand, would serve as an intimation to those responsible for the legislation that the time had arrived when a modification of the licensing laws, particularly as they applied to the taking of licensing polls, was not only advisable but necessary. Messrs. Speight, Davis and Duncan were re-elected directors.
