DAIRY BOARD CHALLENGE

REPLY TO CITY CRITICISM NO DESIGNS OF SOLE CONTROL. STATEMENT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. MR. DYNES FULTON’S REJOINDER. To show why some better method of marketing than the present should not be adopted and to explain what the producers had achieved since the abolition of the Dairy Produce Control Board’s marketing policy was a challenge issued by Mr. Dynes Fulton, acting-chairman of the board, to the Wellington business man who, according to a Press Association message published yesterday, criticised the marketing proposals at present under consideration by the board. Mr. Fulton made his challenge in the course of an address to the dairy factory representatives of Ward 4 at New Plymouth yesterday. The Wellington man had said the idea behind the scheme was to get the control of New Zealand butter into the hands of a small coterie in Tooley Street, Mr. Fulton said. The Wellington man was stated to be intimately connected with the trade, and he had made his remarks in the course of comment on the proposals for the control and regulation of the marketing of New Zealand butter and cheese as made to the Dairy Board by the Dairy Produce Importers’ Association in London. He had further claimed that the Dairy Board had made one attempt at control and had made “an awful mess of it.” “I challenge that man to justify the statement he has made by coming .to New Plymouth or some other dairying centre and telling the producers what has been achieved since the abolition of that marketing policy and why some better method should not be sought,” Mr. Fulton said. Although he himself was no orator Mr. Fulton said he would attend the meeting and bring with him facts and figures with which to confront the Wellington critic. It was in no way an effort to take sole control of the market or the produce.
