MATAU NEWS

HALL COMMITTEE EUCHRE. The Matau hall committee held a well attended euchre party recently. The prizes for euchre were won by Mrs. L. Ayers and Mr. E. McCoard. After supper a dance was held, the music being supplied by Miss H. Smaill and Messrs. W. Rawlinson and A. Smellie. Mr. P. Rolfe was master of ceremonies. . Very heavy rain fell on Saturday and Sunday-last and the rivers were in high flood, doing a great deal of damage to the bridges. One bridge over the Matau River to a settler’s property was washed completely away. Other small bridges had their decking badly tossed about. Several road slips were brought down but no large ones were reported. Eleven unemployed relief men are at work keeping the roads in repair and clearing slips. The supper cloth competition in aid of tennis club funds was won by Mrs. H. Larsen. Mrs. A. Rolfe is visiting Hamilton. Miss M. Smellie is visiting Uruti. Mrs. Grieg is the guest of Mrs P. Rolfe.
