SPEECH MISINTERPRETED
BRITISH MINISTER ON QUOTAS. ATTITUDE TO NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, July 17. The Rt Hon. J. G. Coates to-day received a cablegram from the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes in which the latter says that Mr. W. E. Elliot’s statement in the House of Commons has apparently been misinterpreted. Mr. Forbes said: “Mr. Elliot definitely, said to me that the trade position has no bearing whatever on a quota proposal, and it is entirely a matter of interest to the United Kingdom farmers, who are strongly pressing for restrictions on the importation of butter _ and cheese from abroad, which is glutting the market and bearing down prices. “The treatment by New Zealand of the British manufacturers so far as the tariff is concerned is considered to be fully satisfactory by the British authorities, and.has at no time beenraised in connection with the discussions that have taken place.”
