LOVE AND FRAUD
TREASURE HUNT TRICK. YOUTH SENT TO PRISON. An amusing trial is reported from Prague. A peasant youth named iiavlichek hit on the ingenious idea of making money out of the rumours generally current in villages regarding buried treasures. He succeeded in Pe^^F 8 a wealthy neighbour that in an old book he had found directions for finding the site of the treasure and induced him to provide funds for excavations. At the same time he became secretly engaged to the neighbour’s daughter. The preparation, for excavating took so long that the financier eventually lost patience and threatened to inform the police if treasure were not found the very next day. In despair the guilty youth confessed to his fiancee, an s e offered to help him. ; The couple put one of the girls dowry ducats in an earthen jar and buried it, and this was “discovered” when digging began next day. At first the girls was delighted, but later, when rec ognised the jar as one he had bought himself, and found that a similar com was missing from his daughters cha , his fury knew no bounds. • , youth was charged wi* .fraud and sentenced to three months imprisonment. It has been arranged.that at the end of this tune he is to beJtaken on as a day labourer to work off his Su to his J. labour B. has promised the. daughters hand U M mends his ways. .
