MANGATOKI NEWS

RED CROSS SOCIAL. A SPLENDID EFFORT. The flag five hundred tournament arranged by the Mangatoki Red Cross class was well attended. There were many visitors from outside districts, including Sister Small and Miss Rae and Mrs. M. R. Jones, of the Hawera Red Cross Society. The games were well organised. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Carlson and Mr. and Mrs. J. Carlson with 29 flags were the winners of the prizes for the best table. The Misses Bootten and partners received the consolation prizes. Sister Small presented the prizes. There was dancing after supper to voluntary music supplied by Mesdames Jones and Anderson, the Misses D. and E. Gatenby and Iris Carlson. Messrs. L. J. Taylor and C. W. Carlson were masters of ceremonies. Mrs. A. E. Mahon (secretary) and the committee are deserving of credit for. organising and carrying out the function, which more than fulfilled its object—the payment of hall rent and other expenses for the season’s classes. Value of Competitions. 1 A decided advancement was evident in the pit ensilage judged last week by Messrs. J. M. Smith and C. Haynes, of the Agricultural Department. Mr. Smith said the number of pits indicated the progress of the district. The ensilage judged was even better than that seen by him in North Taranaki, but there was room for improvement in the finish of the cover and earth support. It was evident that advantage had been taken of the criticism made last year, which proves the value of competitions and the good work of the officials from the Agricultural Department. The almost complete elimination of waste noticeable in practically all the pits and the stacks judged showed a decided improvement on previous years in this respect. A pleasing feature of the field day was the number of young farmers present, all keen to gain knowledge of improved farm methods.
