WOMEN’S DIVISION BIRTHDAY. SUCCESSFUL CELEBRATION. ( The celebration of the third birthday of th© Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union took place on Thursday. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from the Bell Block, Brixton, Tarurutangi, New Plymouth and Urenui branches and the Tikorangi Women’s Institute. Th© president (Mrs. H. E. Blyde) welcomed the visitors. A splendid programme was given as follows: Pianoforte solo, Miss Merle Jennins; recitation, Mrs. Brown (New Plymouth); song, Mrs. Staples; song, Mrs.E. Fussell; recitation, Miss McPhillips (New Plymouth); song, Miss Combs; solo dance, Miss Merle Jennins. The accompaniments were played by Miss Jennins and Miss Combs. A playette by the younger members entitled “Those Troublesome Servants” proved very entertaining. Those who took part were the Misses Munro, Staples, N. Walace, G. Waldie, N. Munro, I. Astwood and J. James. A competition arranged by Mrs. J. E. Bigelow was won by Miss Gladys Ackland and Mrs. W. Clark junr. Mrs. B. Harrison gava the prizes. Afternoon tea was served in the supper room of the hall, where the tables were decorated with bowls of spring flowers. The elaborately iced and decorated birthday cake with three candles was in a prominent place on the president’s table. Before cutting the cake Mrs. H. E. Blyde welcomed Mr. W. N. Ackland, secretary of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, and asked him to light the candles on the cake. The presidents of the visiting branches congratulated Lepperton on attaining its third birthday and upon the splendid display of work under the supervision of Mrs. W. N. Ackland. Mrs. Blyde extended thanks to Mrs. Ackland for making the birthday cake and to Mrs. Alfred Kilpatrick for icing and decorating. Thanks were accorded the performers and Mrs. J. E. Bigelow and Miss Wright for arranging the programme. By request Mrs. E. Fussell sang. Schoolboys Win Rugby. The Lepperton school defeated Tarurutangi by 19 poits to 5 at Rugby on Wednesday. A number of members of the Women’s Division travelled to Waitara on , Wednesday to attend the Brixton branch’s first birthday party. At Mrs. J. E. Bigelow’s house on Monday evening the Methodist Class girls entertained Miss Sheat, the organiser. After tea Miss Sheat addressed the girls. Mrs. A. G. Drake was hostess to the Ladies’Card Club last week. Each member who attends pays in 6d, the total amount of which goes towards the local library fund in th© absence of the Government subsidy, which has been withdrawn. Mrs. H. B. Lepper is visiting Palmerston North. Mr. L. Jennins is on a visit to the Waikato.
