QUOTA WANTED

INSISTENCE BY BRITAIN NEW POLICY OF PEOPLE MEANS OP RAISING PRICES CONCERN OF MR. FORBES PRESSURE ON GOVERNMENT (Special to United Press Association.) London, July 13. Agricultural organisations throughout Britain are becoming more active daily, voicing the difficulties experienced by farmers in carrying on under the handicap of the present low prices. To-day The Times editorially gave approval to the steps so far taken by the British Minister of Agriculture (Mr. W. E Elliot) to improve the farming prospects with the restriction of imports of certain commodities. The farmers themselves largely blame the Dominions for depressing prices by increased supplies. An instance of this occurred in the experience of Sir Thomas Wilford, New Zealand High Commissioner, who when visiting Cambridge in New Zealand pro r duce interests found the farmers there bitterly blaming New Zealand, whose produce was prominent in the shops. There can he no donht that tremendous pressure is being brought to bear on the British Government for the restriction of overseas supplies of butter and cheese, and Mr. Elliot m turn is endeavouring to impress the necessity of some agreement with New Zealand. In this direction he has asked for meetings with the New Zealand representatives. Mr G W. Forbes, Mr. R. Masters and the chairmen of the Dairy and Meat Boards are in close consultation on the matter. The situation is giving great concern to Mr. Forbes and Mr. Masters, and in view of the pressure being brought to bear the subject has far the most important place with them at present. There is little doubt that the restriction of imports on foodstuffs as a. means of raising prices is rapidly becoming accepted as the policy of the large majority of people in Britain.
