FARMERS’ CONFERENCE ENDS

MR. POLSON AGAIN PRESIDENT. SMALLER HOUSE NOT FAVOURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual conference of the Farmers’ Union ended to-day, when Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., Stratford, was re-elected president. The Government was asked to make a further and careful investigation into the unemployment question with a view to rendering adequate assistance to unemployed women with no financial resources. It was decided to draw the attention of electric power boards to the necessity of reviewing costs with a view to reducing charges for the coming season to the smallest amount possible. A remit favouring a reduction of the number of members of Parliament was defeated. Mr. A. E. Robinson (Auckland) said it was ridiculous to talk of the expense of Parliament in view of the millions of pounds of public money squandered in the past. The talk of a reduction of members came, from the cities, and as usual the country people swallowed the bait. If the conference agreed to the remit the country quota would be upset and the farmers might find themselves with much less representation in Parliament. The election of officers Resulted: President, .Mr, Polson (re-elected unopposed); vice-presidents, Messrs. W. W. Mulholland (Canterbury), H. E. Bly de (North Taranaki) and E. H. Murray (Otago); treasurer, Mr. W. B. Matheson (Wellington); advisory committee Messrs. R. H. Feisst (Cambridge), W. W. Morrison (Maxwelltown) and C. C. Jackson (Wairarapa) representing the North Island, Messrs. J. D. Hall (Canterbury), J. D. Revie (Otago) and D. Dickie (Southland) the South Island.
