ALTON FIELD COMPETITIONS

HAY AND ENSILAGE JUDGED. RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES. The judging in the hay and ensilage competitons under the auspices of the Alton branch of the Farmers’ Union was completed in the Whenuakura district yesterday. Keen interest has been shown throughout, with an enthusiastic following of 50 farmers. Following is a complete list of those stacks and pits judged: ALTON-KAKARAMEA. STACK ENSILAGE.

UNBEATEN OPUNAKE SIDE. THIRD GRADE COMPETITION. The Opunake third grade Rugby team continued its unbeaten record in the coastal competition at Opunake on Wednesday by defeating Rahotu by 15 points to nil. Tito, Burton and Forsyth scored tries, Robinson converting all three. The game was more closely contested than the score suggests. An easy kick in front of the posts was missed and a try lost through touching down short of the line on the part of Rahotu. The referee was Mr. A. Elgar. PATEA AMATEUR BOXING. SEASON’S SECOND TOURNAMENT. A programme for the Patea Boxing Association’s second tournament of the season has been arranged for presentation at the Patea town hall on Monday. The match committee has travelled both the Taranaki and Wanganui provinces to see the contestants in action, resulting in the grouping of 26 talented exponents of the fistic art in what should prove thrilling and willing battles. The matchings are: Green v. Anderson, Papps v. Nancarrow, Brosnan v. R. Cuff, Dwyer v. Page, Hussey ,v. Gordon, Gilmore v. Swallow, Burke v. G. Cuff, Werata v. Denham, O’Keefe v. Murphy, Moffitt v. V. Brosnan, T. Walker v. Dawson, Nicholls v. Whatnaugh, Quinlan v. G. PownaiL ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The eleventh annual ball of the Ha-, wera High School Old Boys and Old Girls’ Association will be held in the Winter Show Buildings on Wednesday, July 19. A first-class orchestra will provide tile music. Smith and Trim advertise particulars of their mart sale for to-day of poultry, furniture, fruit, etc., at 1.30 p.m., and the sale of shop and window fittings on behalf of Messrs. H. J. Grieve and Co. on the premises, comer High and Union Streets, Hawera, at 11 a.m. Smith and Trim Ltd. advertise particulars of a sale of household furniture and effects, also a five-seater Buick car, on account of Mrs. W. A. Muir, who is giving up house-keeping,, at the Foresters’ Hall, Hawera, at 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday next. The Hawera Boxing Association has arranged to hold an amateur tournament in the Opera House on July 31. A lecture on swine husbandry will be given by Mr. Gorringe, of the Department of Agriculture, in the Otakeho Hall on Monday. The switching-on of electric power in the Ohangai district will be marked by a ball in the Ohangai hall on Friday, July 23.
