ARREST MADE AT ELTHAM

ALLEGED ENTRY OF HOUSE.

INCIDENT IN HAWERA STORE.

Alleged to be implicated in a daring attempt at theft, a young man was arrested at Eltham yesterday by Detective A. B. Meiklejohn. The arrest was the sequel to the entering of a Hawera store last week-end. It was at midnight on Saturday that Mr. W. R. Shaw, a Hawera storekeeper, who lives at the rear of his business premises, opposite the gates of King Edward Park, was awakened by a noise. By the time he had switched on the light the intruder had vanished. . There were, however, traces of his daring attempt to steal the money in the house, which was kept in a locker in Mr. Shaw’s bedroom.

Apparently he had opened the locker, but in the darkness had fumbled and dropped a bag full of coins. It was the noise of this falling on the floor that awakened Mr. Shaw. It is understood the intruder escaped empty-handed, although a considerable sum of money was in the house.

It is believed the intruder entered ths building through the pantry window, under which boxes were piled, and made his exit through the back door, which he had opened from the inside to facilitate his escape..

As the result of police investigations yesterday's arrest was made. The man will be brought before the court at Eltham this morning and the police will then probably ask for a remand to Hawera.
