BOYS’ ESCAPADE
PERILOUS TRAIN JOURNEY.
100 MILES ON BUFFERS.
Because they wanted to see coal mines three Sydney schoolboys, one 13 and the other two 11 years of age, climbed on the buffers of a goods train at North Strathfield on a recent evening, and, perched all the time ,in that precarious position, travelled almost 100 miles north to Woodville Junction, Newcastle. - \ The night was cold, and it is almost incredible that the boys mapaged to retain a grip sufficient to preserve them from death under the wheels as the train clattered down declines and laboured up hills on a five hours’ journey. The young adventurers were found by railway officials when the train arrived at the junction, and they were sent to the children’s shelter for the rest of the night. The father of one of them went to Newcastle next day to take them back to Sydney. ■
