HORSES ON HAWERA TRACKS

PERFORMANCES AT TRENTHAM. OTHERS IN PREPARATION. Track work at Hawera this week is rather dull as some of the best of the horses are attending the Wellington meeting. The representatives from the district did not race up. to expectations on Tuesday but may fare better to-day and Saturday. , . . Copey was a big disappointment in the Wellington Steeples. He has been working well lately and his poor forhi is consequently hard to understand. Both Little Doubt and Gibraltar ran good races and a little improvement should find them paying expenses. Gibraltar will be better suited by the longer distance to-day, while Little Doubt should have benefited by the race. ■ The Tiger ran a good race, but March Alorie was never in a winning position. The remaining member of the Hawera contingent is Weatherzane, who did not start on Tuesday but is to run in the Trial Plate to-day. Weatherzane is a fair sort of a' maiden but the company appears rather strong for him in this event. ' ■ Attentive has been recommissioned and looks in great order. He should come to hand very quickly if. required. The Tonbridge gelding looked like turning out decidedly useful at one stage this season, but although he raced fairly well throughout he did not quite come up to expectations. As he was schooled a couple of times before being spelled it is on the cards that he will do his future racing over the hurdles. Carfex is hitting out freely in the steady work allotted him. He gives every indication of being decidedly useful next season.

O. Cox is to leave for Australia with Golden Hair at the end of this month. She continues to please in her track work. She may be accompanied on the trip by Peschiera, who is also in fine order. In his racing to date Peschiera has demonstrated that he is more than useful, and if taken across the Tasman he should prove a payable proposition. Flying East has been working on the roads during the last few days. He is still very burly. J. Fryer’s maiden Haunui is being given plenty of useful work. To date Iris form has been very mediocre but

he is a good-looking sort and may do better when tried again.

The rising two-year-olds, the Hunting Song—Camiola colt and the Diacquenod —Vivo youngster have been physicked and are enjoying two or three days’ spell. Both move nicely and show plenty of promise. Tenacre was given a further, essay over the steeplechase fences on Tuesday, when .he jumped a couple of brush fences with H. Mills in the saddle. So far he has not been sent over the solid obstacles—the post and rails, sod wall and hencoop—but judging by the way he negotiated the brushes the other fences should not trouble him. He is to make his first appearance as a. 'chaser at the forthcoming Foxton . meeting. On returning, from Wellington J. Fryer'is going to take in hand a Waverley owned gelding by Daniloff, which he will prepare for hunters’ races. No Doubt is rapidly fining down to racing condition. The good-looking son of Chief Ruler should be a good stakeearner next season.
