OHURA RUGBY GAME

NIHO NTHO DEFEATS OHURA. Football that roused great local interest was played at Ohura on Saturday. The teams playing were Haeo versus Matiere and Ohura versus Niho Niho. As is the custom, the championship game was played on a neutral ground for the Matiere—Heao match. The King Country selector, Mr. Rice, was present. Owing to sickness and other causes the Ohura side comprised five junior players. Niho Niho won the toss and Jorgensen lucked off. There was vigorous play for a few minutes when the referee (Mr. Robinson) gave a scrum. The ball coming out the Ohura forwards rushed round too quickly, giving a free kick to Niho Niho. The Niho Niho backs pressed hard and for a time the play was all in the home team’s half. A dangerous looking forward rush was stopped by the Ohura backs. The ball was sent well up the field but was returned over the dead-ball line. There was a hard tussle in the comer which ended in a scrum. There followed play which carried the ball , from twentyfive to twenty-five, but finally the superiority of the Niho Niho backs manifested itself and after a quick rush Julian scored a try for Niho Niho near the posts. Weinberg failed to convert Brett’s left foot kicks found the line repeatedly. A man was off-side and a free kick was awarded Ohura. Jones took the kick from near half-way. For a time in the second spell Ohura had the better of the game. The better combination of the opposing side, however, soon showed itself again. Hayward gave good exhibitions of tackling. A Niho Niho man was again off-side near half-way and Jones again attempted to goal'but failed by a very small margin.- The Niho Niho backs were hard pressed but they defended well and managed to get the ball away in a passing rush. Gadsby found the line near half-way. A fast bit of play followed, carrying the game into the Ohura twenty-five. Dunn secured the ball and made a smart dash to score near the comer. Weinberg converted. Howie took the ball near half-way and made a very fast dash down the line. He w’as tackled and fell heavily. After attention by ambulance men he left the field. Roberts was moved from the forwards to take his place as wing. Dunn obtained the ball and made an excellent run but was not supported. A scrum followed from which Weinberg obtained the ball and scored near the comer. Weinberg converted. The game continued for a time in the Niho Niho twenty-five. Jones .attempted to “pot” a goal. The Niho Niho forwards pressed the game to the other end of the field. Jones made a good save by finding the line. After the line-out J. Beale obtained the ball and the Ohura line was again crossed. Weinberg converted and the final score was Niho Niho 16, Ohura 0.
