AUROA DISTRICT NEWS

CRICKET CLUB’S SOCIAL. The final euchre and dance party in aid of the Auroa Cricket Club was held on Friday evening as a “long night.” There was a large attendance. The first part of the evening was devoted to euchre. The prizes were won by Mrs. Whalen (Kapuni) 1, Miss Alice Dickson (Pihama) 2; Mr. Jim Davison 1, Mr. Fred Hughes 2. At the conclusion of the games supper was provided, after which dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by the Maori orchestra. The winners of novelty dances were: Monte Carlo waltz, Mr. and Mrs. Les. Hodge; statue waltz, Mr. Granville and Miss F. Brown; Monte Carlo waltz, Mr. Dew and Miss Rutherford. A competition for an iced fruit cake made by Mrs. E, C. Evans was won by Mr. Ken Muggeridge, and a cushion worked in pen painting by Mrs. Hamblyn was won by Mr. G. Whalen. These two competitions realised £5 for the cricket club funds. The points prizes for the season were won by Miss Alice Dickson (124 points), who received an oak three-tier cakestand, and Mr. Monte Yates (120 points), who received a suit case. Mrs. W. B. Brown was second, Mrs. Whalen third and Mrs. Mischefski fourth for the points places, while Mr. Ken Symes gained second place, .Mr. A. Smith third and Mr. W. B. Brown fourth for the season’s play. After the presentation of prizes Mr. Schwieters on behalf of the cricket club thanked all for their continued support, particularly the ladies’ committee. Special reference was made to Mr. B. Cameron, who as secretary had accomplished the bulk of the work. Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Hamblyn were accorded a vote of thanks for donating the cake and the cushion. Mr. Jas. Freyne was master of ceremonies. Songs were sung by Mr. Eli, Te Kiri, each item being encored. At the last meeting of the Auroa branch of the Women’s Division the president on behalf of the members expressed regret at the loss of so valued a member as Mrs. Cave, who is leaving fcr Kapuni, and wished her well. Mrs. Cave’s place in the district will be hard to fill Personal. . Mr. Harry Winters is the guest of his sister, Mrs. Blackstock. Mr. and Mrs. Bigham are staying with Mr. R. E. Davison. Mr. Jim McCarty has gone to Wavcrley pig hunting and has put up a good record. , Mr, Jos. McCarty, New Plymouth, has been visiting Auroa. ' Miss Alice Dickson spent the weekend with Mrs. Granville. Mr. and Mrs. Schwieters will leave on Monday for their annual holiday in the north.

Mrs. Ray Smith is an inmate of the Kaponga hospital. ' Mr. T. Suddens, Nelson, is spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Davies. Mrs. Preston, Normanby, has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Davies. Miss Irene Purdy has returned from a holiday spent at Wellington. GENERAL ITEMS. Elusive Prizewinner. After giving Press representatives . a troubled time in their endeavours to interview him Mr. F. Hart, winner of the “Luck at Last” art union, capped his career yesterday morning by disappointing a number of salesmen and sightseers at the Hawera railway station. Rumour had it that Mr. Hart was to leave for Wellington by train, and a collection of insurance salesmen, land agents and other representatives of the commercial world gathered at the station. The intended victim, anticipating such a reception, left by car. Hawera Charity Ball.

The following committee has been set up for the Hawera charity ball: Messrs. S. A. Chisholm, J. E. Campbell, A. and P, Coleman, A. K. -Fyson, W. J. Bright, T. R. Overton, P. O. Veale and J. W. Velvin. An adult ball and a children’s ball will be held on successive nights in August. Winter Show Prize Money.

Prize money totalling £3OO was posted to exhibitors by the South Taranaki Winter Show Company yesterday.

Manaia Euchre Social.

The euchre and dance social on Monday evening in St. Patrick’s Hall, Manaia, was a great success. The ladies’ first prize was won by Mrs. L. Mudford and the second by Miss Miller. Both scored Hi games and played off. The men’s first prize was won by Mr. M. Hooper with 10i games, and the second by Mr. Edgar Burke with 10 games. Music was played by Mrs. W. Bennett, Mr. Hunger and Mr. P. Mullin, with extras by Mrs. Mudford, Miss T. Jones and Master B. Whalen. A Monte Carlo fox-trot was won by Miss R. Duggan and Mr. Dombroski. Supper was provided by a committee consisting of Mesdames C. A. Burke, H. P. Gibson, E. Bourke, D. Murphy, D. Crompton and Sattler. Inter-School Rugby.

A team from the Feilding Agricultural High School will play the Hawera High School Rugby team at the showgrounds at 2.30 to-day, and at 11.30 this morning basketball teams from the < two schools will play at the High School grounds.

NORMANBY NOTES. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly .meeting of the Normanby School Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present Mesdames W. G. Gane and T. Evans, Messrs. D. Henderson, 11. D. Hughes, C. W. Haidway and T. Evans (secretary), -n the absence of the chairman, the Itev. J. Watson, Mr. Hardway presided. The headmaster (Mr. T. Taylor) reported that the school attendance for the month had been fairly satisfactory considering the time of yeai an e usual changes in the faiming community. There had been four cases of mumps during the month. Mr. Education Board attendance officer had visited the school in connection with the attendance of some of the children, fhc school path had received the necessary attention and was now proving sa is factory, and the necessary fire wood had been cut. A donation of an Australian lizard, preserved in spirits, for the schoo museum was received from Mr. Hoskin, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr. Hughes’ offer of plants for the school hedge was accepted with thanks. It was left to Mr. Henderson to arrange for the necessary repairs to the school windmill and Messrs. Henderson and Hughes were appointed visiting committee for the month. The concert committee reported having met the headmaster and staff and as a, result arrangements for the various items were well in hand for the concert at the end of the term. It was decided to hold a combined concert and dance. MANAIA DRAMATIC CLUB. TWO COMEDIES PRESENTED. Mr. and Mrs. F. Garner were the hosts for the fortnightly meeting of the Manaia Dramatic Club on Tuesday night, when two one-act comedies were read. The first, “Personally, by Letter.” by lan Hay, was read by Misses M. Howell (Marjorie) and M. Mitchell (Mrs. Grice) and Messrs, N. Walker (Timothy), G. Hammonds (Bill) and C. Sproull (Mr. Grice). The parte in the second play, “Wurzey-Flummery,” by A. A. Milne, were taken by Misses F. Silby (Mrs. Crawshaw) and J.*Mitchell (Viola Crawshaw) and Messrs. R. Hammonds (Denis Clifton), D. G. Sherson (Richard Meriton, M.P.) and D. G. Hayter (Robert Crawshaw, M.P.). The remainder of the evening was spent in community singing, for which Mrs. Garner played. . Miss M. Howell and Mr. D. G. Hayter won a competition. On behalf of those present Mr. Mitchell thanked the hosts for their hospitality, Mr. Garner replying. EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE.

MANAIA CATHOLIC FUNCTION.

There was a fair attendance at the second of the present series 6f euenre tournaments at St. Joseph’s Hall, Manaia, on Monday night. Euchre prizes Were won by Mrs. Mudford, 11J games, after a • play-off with Miss Miller, and Mr. M. Hooper, 10 i games. Mr. Edgar Burke was runner-up for the men’s prize. Music for dancing was supplied by Mis. W. Bennett, piano, Mr. Hunger, saxophone, and Mr. P. Mullins, violin, while extras were given by Mrs. Mudford, Miss Jones and Mr. Whalen. Miss R. Duggan and Mr. J. Dombroski won a Monte Carlo one-step. ' Supper arrangements were in the hands of a committee comprising Mesdames C. A. Burke, E. Bourke, H. P. Gibson, G. Murphy, D. Crompton and Sattler, whilst Mr. L. Hughes as master of ceremonies kept the dance going well into the early hours.

HAWERA REVALUATIONS.

OBJECTIONS PROBABLY FEW.

Though a sitting of the Assessment Court will be held at Hawera to consider objections to ihe recent general revaluation of the borough, it is not anticipated that the Court will be occupied for long. Not many objections will be raised, it is believed. The principal objectors, it is understood, will be retailers on High Street between Regent Street and Victoria Street. The reduction in the valuation of properties in this portion of the town is not so .great as in less popular business areas and in the residential section. Slight anomalies are also said To' exist, but the valuer, Mr. D. I. Gardiner, has the right to adjust these. '*» .< The values given to the ’complaining section are based on the rents 'received. Some such result as the yielded was generally anticipated from a consideration of rents in various .portions of the town. ! PERSONAL. Tire funeral of Mrs. W. Rye took place at the Waihi cemetery on Sunday. The Rev. H. Whitby James, vicar of St. Mary’s, Hawera, was the minister. The bearers were Messrs. B. Leslie, E. Leslie, -H. Engleberg, T.' Langlands, R. Langlands and E. Sturgeon. Beautiful wreaths were sent by relatives and friends and a large number followed in the cortege to the cemetery.

ROAD CYCLING AT PATEA. T. MAULE MAKES FAST TIME. The weekly road cycle race of the Patea Amateur Athletic Club was held yesterday, the juniors traversing a threemile circuit to Gilligan s and return, and a 12-mile course to Ball Road corner and return engaging the seniors. T. Maule’s time for the 12 miles was 31m. 255. He was followed by G. Lithgow, five lengths separating them. The details of the junior race are:— F. Wills (90s), 1; L. Reid (scr.) 2 and fastest time, 9m. 365; J. Wills (205.) 3 and second fastest time, 9m. 575. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ BALL. PATEA FUNCTION SUCCESS. Under a canopy of gay bunting and strings of coloured lights about too hundred couples made merry at the Patea Town Hall on Tuesday. Successful far in excess of the returned soldiers committee’s expectations, the ball was both financially and fraternally satisfactory. Music, floor, supper and lavish decorations, together with the gay camaradarie of the dancers, ensured a good time for everyone present. A large portion of the crowd danced long after three o’clock in the morning and were, reluctant to depart at the cpnclusion of the programme. The sand-bagged dug-out with sentry beside the glowing brazier made a stage setting that evoked appreciative comment. The proceeds are to be distributed by the Patea R.S.A. to assist returned men or their dependents who may be in distress.

WAVERLEY PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. A. D. McPherson, a former resident of Waverley who for some years has been living at Foxton, died on Saturday. Before her marriage Mrs. McPherson was Miss Margaret Bradley, youngest daughter of the late Mr. J. Bradley, Derry Farm, Waverley. She leaves a husband and young family. Mrs. F. Johnston spent several days at Wanganui last week, returning to Waverley on Friday. Mr. L. Craig, who has been staying with Mr. S. Strachan, returned to Tauinarunui on Monday.
