EMPLOYMENT OF GIRLS

SUCCESS OF Y.W.C.A. SCHEME. POSITION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. ✓ During the six months it has been in operation, the Friendly Service Bureau organised by the New Plymouth branch of the Y.W.C.A. has enabled 71 unemployed women and girls to obtain either temporary, or as in most cases, permanent positions. The service, which was originally the idea of Miss Greenwell, secretary of the Y.W.C.A. (New Plymouth), was begun in December, 1932, but it was not until Mrs. Hislop took charge in January that the work of the bureau began to have any noticeable effect.

In the report for June presented to the meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors in New Plymouth yesterday Mrs. Hislop stated that the total number on the roll was now 167, 28 of whom had registered during the month. Twentyfour requests for help in homes had been received, and 17 of the positions had been satisfactorily filled through the agency of the bureau.

“At present,” said Miss Greenwell, “there is a fair demand for girls with more experience, especially in cooking. When the work was first started the positions offering were nearly for very young girls, such as for nursemaids and parttime helpers. Now the situations offering are for a more responsible type of girl, and carry with them, of course, a higher rate of pay.” In the meantime, for those girls whose time is unoccupied, it is hoped to provide sewing classes. The girls are to supply their own materials, but tuition and the use of machines is to be arranged by the' Y.W.C.A.
