LOCAL BODIES’ ASSOCIATION

WITHDRAWAL OF INGLEWOOD.

MOVE TO RESCIND DECISION.

Mr. J. S. Connett waited on the Inglewood Borough Council last night to ask it to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association. Mr. Connett said that all had thought the association had been a happy family and they were very sorry indeed to hear of Inglewood’s withdrawal. He put before the council the benefits of the association, stating that it promoted a friendly relationship between local bodies and brought them together to hear each other’s views on different matters. -He thought the association also created good feeling among the staffs of the various bodies. It gave the various bodies a broader outlook. In Inglewood’s case concerning Crown rates the borough had the help and sympathy of the association and efforts were being made to bring about a better relation between the Crown and local bodies. There were many things in which all boroughs and counties wei'e interested such as noxious weeds and motor regulations, and in these matters the association was of great assistance. Undoubtedly all the local bodies combined had more pressure in a matter' than any borough or county would have singly. In the matter of distribution of heavv traffic fees it had been suggested that tire larger counties and boroughs should make a contribution towards the smaller bodies; this feeling had been brought about by the association. There were many other benefits that Mr. Connett mentioned that the borough gained by being a member of the association, such as the purchase of bitumen. After Mr. Connett had withdrawn and councillors had discussed the matter Cr. Spurdie gave notice of motion that the previous motion that the Inglewood borough withdraw from the association be rescinded. _ z -- - ■ '
