RATES IN PATEA COUNTY

LEVY TO BE SAME AS IN 1932. FRESH METALLING EVERY YEAR. Notice was given by the Patea Comity Council yesterday of intention to strike the following rates: Waverley riding, 5-8 d in £I of the capital value; Otoia, Id; Kapara, ltd; Moumahaki, td. These are the same as the rates last year. The council is adhering to its policy of increasing the length of metal each year. The general position of the comity insofar as affected, by rates and the policy of the council were considered fully in committee. Subsequently the chairman (Cr. W. G. Belton) made a short statement on the policy of the council to the. Press. .j «. ♦ The council considered, he said, that it should continue with doing a certain amount of new metalling each year in addition to adequately maintaining the present' metal roads. With care the council could do this on the rates levied last year. The fact that subsidies on expenditure on main highways had been considerably curtailed enabled the expenditure of a certain amount. of money which otherwise would have been the countys share of highways works to be devoted to side roads.
