EUCHRE TOURNEY FOR SCHOOL. The euchre tournament to raise funds for the Mokau School was continued on Friday night in the schoolroom. There was an improved attendance. The prizes for the evening were won by Mrs. Hansen and Mr. Sullivan. The annual basketball dance was held in the Mokau Hall on Saturday evening, and was well patronised, 45 couples being present. The hall was decorated in the team’s colours and nikau fronds. The . music was supplied by Miss Ida Hansen, Mokau, and extras werg played by Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Sampson. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hughes, Kaponga, -and Mr. W. Huki, Waikawau. The lucky spot dance was won by Miss K. Piko, Mokau, and Mr. A. O’Donald, Tongaporutu.

New School for Mokau River. Some weeks ago a meeting was held by residents of the Mokau River for the purpose of obtaining a school for their district. The Taranaki Education Board was approached and a portable school has now been forwarded for erection on the property of Radford and McKenzie, about nine miles up the river from Mokau. The school, which is a oneroom building, was previously used at Inglewood. As far as is known no permanent teacher has yet been appointed, but it is understood that the position will be filled temporarily by a relieving teacher. Although there are only about 12 children for enrolment, the school will be a great boon to the settlers in that district, aS in the past they have experienced great difficulty in having their children educated. The building was taken up the river on Saturday by the launch Cygnet

Women’s Division Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, MokauAwakino branch, was held on Friday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. Price, Mohakatino. Mrs. J. Raven presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. W. D. Black. Visitors to' the meeting were Mesdames Scott and Powell and the Misses Hughes. It was decided that all future meetings be held at, the Tainui Private Hotel, Mokau. Mrs. F. Widt, Mokau, demonstrated the making of rag floor rugs. The. guessing competition was won by Mrs.- Winstanley, Awakino. The meeting concluded With afternoon tea, served by M"esdames Price and Widt.

Shipping Busy. The Mokau Collieries steamer. Mahurangi and the oil vessel Kapui are taking full advantage of the fine weather conditions prevailing and are making frequent trips with coal to Waitara. The Mokau bar is reported to have been in excellent condition for some months.
