WORKS CHAIRMAN RESIGNS.

“SHOULD RESIGN FROM COUNCIL.”

His resignation as chairman of the works committee of the Stratford Borough Council was received at the meeting last night from Cr. C. R. Finnerty. “I do not want to start any more arguments, but as the views of the council are so opposed to mine I do not think it is fair for me to continue in the position,” Cr. Finnerty said. ‘I think that he should resign from the council altogether in view of his attitude as outlined in the Press,” Cr. C. H. Speck said.

Cr. A. H. Nelson expressed regret that Cr. Finnerty should resign, as he wls a man with a thorough knowledge of his work.

Cr. Finnerty should be asked to reconsider his decision, Cr. R. F. Harkness said. He (Cr. Harkness) certainly had no intention of resigning his position as chairman of the electricity committee . and he suggested Cr. Finnerty carry on and cut his coat according to his cloth.

The resignation was accepted and appreciation of CrJ Finnerty’s past services was recorded.

Cr. Nelson was elected to the position.

Cr. Finnerty asked if the Mayor would accept a motion that the whole council resign and have a new election. Cr. Speck would then have a chance to see where he stood.

ADVERTISERS’ NOTICES. “Have the Scotch contributed more to the development of the Empire than the English?” That question will be debated in the Parish Hall, Stratford, to-night by debating teams from Hawera and Stratford. It is not often that a plam and fancy masquerade dance figures on Stratford s bill of winter entertainments—so the dance to be held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday night by the Motor Sports Club has an appeal apart from the fact that the organising committee has set itself out to offer a programme that will meet with universal approbation. Nominations for the Tariki Sports and Pastimes Club’s boxing and wrestling tournament to be held at Inglewood will close on Saturday. Particulars are advertised in this issue.
