JERSEY DISPERSAL SALE

MR. BELCHER’S CARDIFF STUD.

TOP PRICE TWENTY-TWO GUINEAS.

An unreserved dispersal sale of 80 head of Mr. J. T. Belcher’s “Riverside” Jersey stud, Cardiff, was held at Newton King, Ltd.’s sale yard, Stratford, yesterday, the auctioneers being Newton King, Ltd., and Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., in conjunction. The offering comprised 44 cows, 14 in-calf heifers, 16 yearling heifers, four herd sires and two yearling bulls. Mr. Belcher is retiring from dairying owing to his health. Mr. Belcher thus threw his whole herd on the market. Everything was sold except a line of eight weaner heifers. Together with two others they were put up for sale as a line, but one buyer took two, and as there was no bidding forthcoming for the others they were passed in. A similar line of five offered previously brought 5 gns. each. On the 72 animals sold the average price was a fraction over 8 gns. Top price was made by. Bridge View Sweet Pea (Meadowvale Great Gamboge—Grade’s Lassie), a ten-year-old cow, which went to Mr. E. M. Hardy (Wanganui) at 22 gns. There was little demand for bulls, but the most eagerly sought sire was Sweet Pea’s Jolly Boy (Riverside Waif’s Splendour—Bridge View Sweet Pea), a yearling, purchased by Mr. J. L. Corbett (Ratapiko) for 20 gns. There was a good crowd at the sale, but the majority was there through curiosity rather than a desire to buy, and at the commencement bidding was very desultory. It brightened toward the middle of the sale but tailed off again at the finish. Apart from local men, buyers were present from Hastings, Waverley, Kohuratahi, Maxwell, Tokirimu, Inglewood, Waimate, Wanganui, Ratapiko, Douglas, Ohura and Sanson. Mr. Belcher, who has been dairying for 47 years, has been associated with the breed for many years and has always been recognised for the practical methods he has adhered to in developing his stud. Thus the cattle were of pleasing type coupled with heavy producing ability. Observation of the lots as they went through indicated the fine strains Mr. Belcher had collected and bred together by the sound policy of using home-bred bulls from the choicest females, and in that way doubled up, in many instances, the best breeding lines in the herd. Details of the, sale are:—
