BASKETBALL COMPETITIONS. The Kaimata basketball team played its third match of the season against Convent Old Girls at Kaimata on Thursday. Following were the teams:—Kaimata: R. Dobson, E. Stieller, Cory 11 Phillips, B. - Burkhardt, E. Klenner, T. Dodunski, L. Rumball, J. Thomason, A. Clark, R. Paul, P. Paul, S. Harnett, Convent Old Girls: ,M. Dodunski, E. O’Byrne, M. Wisnewski, E. Dan, N. O’Byrne, M. Hanright. The match was commenced late owing to heavy showers. The hard court was very wet and players found it difficult at times to maintain their foothold, with the result that several sat down involuntary. The j greasy ball also played tricks with the players. The visitor’s team work and goal-throwing proved too good for the home girls and they won by 12 goals to nil. Miss M. K. Hewes was the referee. After the match the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea.

The following Kaimata players will be taking part in the basketball tournament at New Plymouth to-day: C. Phillips, B. Burkhardt,■ E. Klenner, R. Dobson, P. Paul, R. Paul, C. Harnett, I. Buckley, E. Stieller and T. Clark.

The first of a series of euchre parties was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Hunt, Mangaone Road, on Thursday night in support of the Kaimata candidate for the Church of England queen carnival. In spite of the inclement weather a very pleasant evening was spent. Ten games of euchre were played, the winners being Mrs. W. Bracegirdle (8 games) and Mr. I. V. Buchanan (6£ games). Consolation, prizes were won by Miss R. Collingwood (3 games) and Mr. W. Bracegirdle (4 games). During the evening a music guessing competition was won by Mr. D. Bungay.

The Mangaone bridge, Junction Road, is likely to be closed to traffic for a considerable time yet as a good deal of the understructure has been found to be in a worse condition than originally thought. However, the bridge is open to light traffic and cars from 5 p.m. at night at 7.30 each morning. Every other morning it is open till 9.30 to allow milk carts to cross. The wet weather is slowing the repair work. The Misses D. and L. Rollings, Cardiff, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dobson, Junction Road, have returned home. The rainfall at Kaimata for May was exceptionally heavy—the total being 18.7, inches. GENERAL ITEMS. Eltham Anglican Euchre. There was only a fair attendance at the Eltham Church of England euchre party on Thursday. Prizes .were won as follow: Mrs. Cockroft 1, Mrs. Paton 2, Mr. H. Scown 1, Mr. D. McMillan 2. Show Date Fixed. At an executive meeting of the Eltham Horticultural Society the date of the spring show was fixed for Wednesday, September 27, and the schedule committee is now at work revising the schedule, which will be available shortly. Messrs. Pepperell, Gover, Rowe and Lewis were elected delegates to a proposed meeting of a Taranaki Horticultural Council.

300 Unregistered Cars. The cars registered to date at the Eltham post office number 395, the trucks 100 and the motor-cycles 45. There are still over 300 cars to be registered. The postmaster considers that these will be slow in coming in, while in view of the economic situation there will doubtless be a number of cars that will not take the road this year. Some of the unregistered vehicles would be farmers’ trucks, which probably would not be registered until the spring. Hockey Teams.

The bogey match which should have been played yesterday by the lady members of the Stratford Golf Club had to be postponed owing to the wet weather. Stratford Card Party.

The series of euchre parties conducted at St. Joseph’s Hall was continued on Thursday, when the largest number of players since the inauguration of the parties this year sat down at 39 tables. The ladies’ first prize was won by Mrs. Wilmshurst after a tie with Mrs. A. Fitzgerald, who gained second prize. The men’s first prize was won by Mr. J. B. Norris, who cut with Mr. J. J. Lehrke, Messrs. A. Bland, D. Bolger, C. O’Neill and H. Craig had 10 games each to their credit. Entertainment at Toko.

To a large and enthusiastic audience a party of Stratford entertainers presented an attractive programme of sketches, songs, duets and elocutionary numbers at a concert and dance held in the Toko Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the Toko troop of Girl Guides. The artists were Miss Myra Wilson, Mr. T. Boyle, Mr. S. Hayton, Mr. G. Vinsen and Mr. A. Sextus. Dancing filled part of the evening, the music being played by Mr. and Mrs. Chainey and Mr. Platt, with extras by Mr. Von Sturmer. A competition for a quilt was won by Mr. Wallace Wickham and for a cake by Miss C. Kleeman. At the conclusion of the evening Mr. T. T. Murray, on behalf of the president of the troop, Mrs. A. Rowe, extended the thanks of the committee to the performers. PERSONAL ITEMS. The Rev. G. Skuse, Uruti, is visiting Stratford. Mr. A. Yarndley has returned to Stratford from Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. S. Taylor will leave Stratford next week for Wellington. For the past four years Mr. Taylor has been parks curator for the Stratford Borough Council.
