UNCONSCIOUS AT WHEEL

ACQUITTAL OF A DRIVER. That he drove a motor-van while unconscious was the defence successfully put forward at the Old Bailey, London, lately on behalf of Leonard Thomas Wakefield, aged 19, who was charged with the manslaughter of Frank Cecil Astle at Hillingdon, near Uxbridge. Defending counsel said that Wakeford was suffering from an attack of petit mal, a form of epilepsy, when he ran over the man, and knew nothing about the accident. He called medical evidence to show that for a period Wakeford would be unconscious, and, although carrying on automatically, would know nothing of what had happened., Wakeford was found not guilty and discharged. He promised not to apply for another driving licence.
