LOCAL BODIES IN N.Z.
TOTAL OF 681 OPERATING. There are 681 local bodies in New Zealand. The eighth issue of the New Zealand Local Authorities Hand Book, which is now available, embraces the latest statistics covering the operations of municipalities, counties, electric power boards, harbour boards and other bodies. At Maj-ch, 1933, the local bodies included 125 county councils, 122 borough councils, 67 town boards, 18 road boards, 42 river boards, 57 land-drainage boards, 3 urban drainage boards, 3 water boards, 58 fire boards, 45 harbour boards, 45 hospital board?, 39 electric power boards, 53 rabbit boards, ope transport board, one tramway board, one gas board and one local railway board.
In addition there are 18 district councils of the Main Highways Board,' which are intimately concerned with certain aspects of local government. Statistics covering most of these bodies are contained in the new hand book, which comprises 314 pages.
