JULIAN CUP COMPETITION ALBION OVERWHELMS MOTUROA. CALEDONIAN HAS NARROW WIN. A howling, gusty southerly, particularly fierce at the New Plymouth racecourse, made conditions very trying for the Julian Cup matches on Saturday. At times driving rain accompanied the wind. The results were:— Albion 6 v. Moturoa 0. Stratford 4 v. Waitara 3. Caledonian 1 v. Pirates 0. IN THE TEETH OF THE GALE ALBION DEFEATS MOTUROA. COMBINATION WINS THE DAY. With two goals made in the first spell in the teeth of a howling southerly, it was a foregone conclusion that Albion would win the match against Moturoa at the racecourse. The final score was six to nil. Albion’s combination was too good for the other side, which, though it possessed some hard working individual players, lacked the shooting ability to penetrate the defence. Even against the gale in the second spell Alsop and Gray got through several times, but were not supported. Aitchley retired hurt at the interval and R. Roper just before the final whistle. The teams were:— Albion: Lloyd; Woods, Rendall; Jamie- , son, Parkinson, Berry; Upshall, Aitchley, Ibbotson, Phillips, Nicholl. Moturoa: Kenny; Bensley, W. Thomson; Christiansen, J. Thomson, R. Roper; Smith, Anderson, Gray, Alsop, White. Albion kicked off against the gale and within less than a minute Upshall kicked a fluke goal from well out. A brief Moturoa rally again found Upshall in possession from Ibbotson. The former dribbled on and shot, but W. Thomson cleared. Moturoa, assisted by the wind, invaded scoring territory, Smith making a good run, only to be deprived of possession by Berry. After a period in this locality; Parkinson cleared to Ibbotson, to Upshall. These two, with Aitchley, bore'down oh the goal, where W. Thomson, .playing a lone back game, made a clever clearance. After much midfield play and an attack by Moturoa in which the wind proved more of an enemy than an ally Upshall received a pass up and kicked. W. Thomson stopped, but the wind swung the ball out of control and Upshall crossed to Aitchley, who tested Kenny. Another Albion rally along Upshall’s side forced a corner, which was cleared by J. Thomson. Moturoa conceded another corner before getting away on the wings of the wind. J.. Thomson fed the forwards. Christenson and White tested the defence and Smith put in a cross shot for Rendall to clear. Bensley came back to clear another Albion attack. Moturoa got away and Lloyd cleverley cleared a. shot from bunched forwards. Upshall received from Phillips and missed a splendid opportunity by shooting to the side ofthe post. A futile Moturoa’ attack in which Christenson played a. prominent part was cleared by Woods. Upshall dribbled and centred to Phillips, who shot the second goal for Albion. . Kenny cleared shots from Ibbotson and . Upshall. ■ On the change-over Albion immediately took advantage of the wind and Parkinson tested Kenny with a long shot. Moturoa cleared and Alsop rushed down the, line, to be stopped by, Dendall'and the wind. The venue changing again, Rendall, from well but, sent a long shot to bounce against the post and through for the third goal. Smith rushed downfield with a pass from J. Thomson and kicked to Anderson, who centred to Gray. There was no-one to beat but Lloyd, who was opposed by three men, but Gray’s shot against the wind was wide. At the other end, after some wind swept passing, a goal kick and a comer, Bensley made a great save with his feet. Christenson made a fine run and Lloyd a great save. Alsop, who was playing a vigorous game, dribbled down the side and tried to centre, but Rendall cleared, Parkinson sent a long shot and Kenny ran up to save, but Ibbotson rushed in to shoot the rebound for the fourth Albion goal. Kenny made a splendid save when, after stopping a slanting shot, he slipped and, while seated, stopped a shot from an on-rushing forward, and got up to clear. Woods was prominent in defence. With fine understanding he touched back to Rendall, who cleared. At the other end Kenny stopped shots from all directions, his ‘defence being assisted by J. and W. Thomson, Bensley and Anderson. Receiving from a comer Upshall sent a slanting shot through for the fifth goal. Gray tricked Woods, but Berry came across to clear. Gray returned, however, and it required the endeavours of Parkinson and Rendall to save. At the other end Kenny saved a long shot, but Ibbotson rushed in to push through and goal. Rendall headed a nippy side attack by Gray and Woods completed the clearance. The final score was:— Albion 6 Moturoa ...o , 0 . Mr. G. Lawrence refereed well under trying conditions. WIN FOR CALEDONIAN PIRATES NARROWLY DEFEATED. ONE GOAL SCORED IN GAME. Caledonian met and defeated Pirates by one goal to nil at Fitzroy in a dull, uninteresting display.: Caledonian, owing to the absence of three of the regular team, played three “old stagers,” who, though not as young as they used to be showed the younger members many fine points of the game. Territorially Pirates held the advantage, but deplorable finishing lost many good chances. Pirates also missed a penalty in the first spell. Conditions were anything but ideal, a strong cross-wind playing havoc with the ball, and .intermittent showers did not improve matters. The teams were:— Pirates: Atkinson; Anderson, Henry; Pankhurst, Oscroft, Milne; Suthon, Wilmshurst, Harrold, Smith, Ryan. Caledonian: Plumb; Mackay, Rennock; Shepherd, Quay, Bremner; Hill, Rae, Gardner, Rigby, Cummings. Caledonian won the toss and Harrold set the ball in motion and immediately went to the attack, Caledonians at this stage only having eight players. Harrold was in a good position when Mackay dispossessed him and cleared downfield to let his forwards away, but Hill shot over. Play returned to Caledonian’s goal, where Plumb conceded a comer from Ryan’s parting drive, the kick going behind. Immediately from a centre by. Ryan Harrold headed into the goal, but Plumb made a good Caledonian broke away for Gardner to shoot over. The Pirates were soon on the move and Smith’s parting shot was handed in the dreaded area. From the resultant penalty Anderson made a very weak attempt, the ball going several feet outside the posts. Play ranged round midfield. both sides breaking away in turn,

and wild shooting spoiled several likely movements. Pirates looked dangerous when Oscroft and Ryan got through, but the final test found Plumb safe. The Pirates were keeping Caledonian at home, but Mackay was playing well and stalled off many attacks Half-time sounded' with Pirates still on the attack but without any score being registered. Caledonian, attacked from the kick-off and Gardner sent in a fine shot which Atkinson saved but only partly cleared, and Rigby, who was lying handy, had a gift of an open goal, placing Caledonian 1 up. Rigby endeavoured to repeat the dose immediately afterwards and was well away with only the goalie to beat and was about to shoot when Anderson came up fast and cleared. Caledonian was then having all the game. From a comer by Hill which was placed in the goal-mouth a prolonged tussle took place, but Pirates packed the goal and several shots failed to penetrate. Pankhurst eventually ' cleared well downfield with a powerful kick to send his forwards away, the movement. being spoiled by poor shooting. Gardner, Hill and Shepherd made a good run and the former had only the goalie to beat when he slipped and a certain goal “went west” Pirates took up the running from Milne and Oscroft to fail when well placed, but Harrold almost evened the score with a fine drive which Plumb did well to deflect Plumb was having plenty to do, but his job was easy, all the shots being weak. From a goal kick Plumb miskicked and Ryan, who was lying close, missed an open goal from 12 yards .out Hill was injured and left the field for a few minutes. Play became even more ragged than before, the only piece of interest being when Caledonian broke away but the smoke from a passing train obscured players and- ball. It was found, however, by a Pirates player and Anderson decided to try one on his own, taking the ball almost the length of the field to pass to Ryan, who was well placed, but a weak shot was safely disposed of by Plumb. Time sounded immediately afterwards. Caledonians 1 Pirates 0. Mr. T. Farley was referee. STRATFORD BEATS WAITARA EVENLY CONTESTED MATCH. WILSON SHOWS GOOD FORM. A very evenly contested game was played at Anzac Park, Waitara, between Waitara and Stratford. The result was a win for Stratford by four goals to three. The strong south-east wind and a light driving rain somewhat spoilt many good movements. In the latter part of the game Waitara played with ten men, Williamson 'receiving a leg injury which caused him to retire. The teams were: — ' , Stratford: Gibbs, Jones, L. Henderson, Rorison, Pattenden, Dow, Barron, Blythe, C. Henderson, Butt, Millar. Waitara: Jarvis, Ashley, Davis, Lattimer (2), Williams, Wingrove, Williamson, Collingwood, Wilson and Lobban. Stratford kicked off against the wind and immediately made headway, showmg clever combination for the first J 5 minutes. Waitara then took up the attack and during the next 15 minutes scored two goals, both by Wilson. Wilson’s clever footwork nonplussed the Stratford men and it looked as though Stratford was in for a good beating. The Stratford men then rallied and being well led by C. Henderson showed some good combination, the outside left sending in a. fine cross and Jarvis making a good save. The referee awarded a goal, evidently thinking that Jarvis was behind the bar. A few minutes later Millar, the outside right, scored a goal, making the scores 2-all. Play was of an even nature during the remaining few minutes of the ’ first half. On resuming Waitara faced the heavywind with driving rain. The Waitara men like their opponents played a better game against the wind. Wilson and others continually raided Stratford’s territory. The Stratford defence indulged in heavy kicking, which was really the means of the team scoring a furthergoal. The half, Rorison, followed up fast, giving Jarvis no chance. The Waitaramen at this stage were defending stubbornly. Wilson once more got .his forwards away, eventually to receive a pass from Collingwood and score a good goal, giving Gibbs no chance. Williamson received a severe knock and retired, leaving the Waitara team one short Both teams seemed to put some “ginger” into the game and things were, fairly brisk. With five minutes to go Millar- received a pass and went right through the Waitara men and scored a good goal, putting Stratford one in the lead. Waitara tried hard to equalise but the Stratford defence could not be penetrated. Stratford ....’. 4 Waitara 3 Mr. W. Johnston refereed. . SOCCER GAMES IN THE CITIES. Association football competition games reported by the Press Association resulted as follow:— Christchurch: Thistle 2 beat Western 1, St. Albans 4 beat Linwood 2, Rangers 3 beat Technical 1. Auckland: Tramways 1 v. Y.M£.A. 0; Thistle 3 v. New Lynn 0; Onehunga 3 v. Ponsonby 3; North Shore 5 v. Abels 2; Comrades 3 v. Glen Innes 0.
