JUDGING CROPS AT URBNUL u HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED. The. Ureniii. district has "always been .well’, to the 'fore in the Farmers’ Union root crop competitions and this season has proved no exception. With 109 tons of'carrots and 73 tons per acre of swedes the district has lived up .to its reputation of high production. These crops put their respective growers at the head of these classes as far as the judging in North Taranaki has gone at present Judging was carried out on. Thursday and Friday by Mr. J. M. Smith, of the Department of Agriculture, and tire good following of farmers indicated the great interest that is shown in the district. At the conclusion of the judging Mr. J. F. Phillips, president of the Urenui branch for his services and said how fortunate the district was in again having his services. Competitors had every confidence in his judging and great satisfaction was expressed following the judging. Mr. D. L. Tate, also expressed his appreciation of the activities of the department in connection, with the judging of field competitions and stated that while last season’s judging was splendid the mere fact of having one judge operating over the whole province was a decided advantage. , In returning thanks Mr. Smith complimented the competitors upon the results of their labours. It was very pleasing to see competitors who previously had been unplaced coming out on top and he congratulated Mr. B. Weeden and Mr. A. Zimmerman upon their splendid crops. ' An interested visitor who accompanied the party was Mr. J. W. Weeden senior. As Mr. Weeden’s activities in his son’s carrot crop was no small factor in the splendid yield, he was particularly pleased with the results. The party was entertained during the two days by Mr. and Mrs. H. Wells, Mr. and Mrs. and Miss Freeth and Mr. B. Weeden. Details of judging are:—
