BRASS AND PIPE BANDS

ANNUAL REPORT OF UNION. SUCCESS OF RECENT CONTEST. Notwithstanding that bands, like many other institutions, have gone through a very strenuous time owing to depletion of the ranks and unemployment it was very gratifying to the executive and the contest committee to see so many bands taking part in the contest; it shows that interest in the union is still being maintained, states the annual report of the Taranaki’ Brass and Pipe Bands’ Union. The annual contest was held at Eltham, and in accordance with a resolution passed at the last annual meeting, money prizes were deleted from the programme, the prizes consisting of shields only. The net profits after deducting one-third to the union funds were divided pro rata among the competing bands to assist the travelling expenses. Twelve bands (eight brass and four pipe) took part in the contest, which was well carried out by the committee and proved a great success both musically and financially. The attendance of the public, notwithstanding that the weather, more especially in the evening, was very cold, was good. In the B selection the Taranaki Regi-mental-New Plymouth Municipal Band annexed the quickstep and aggregate shields, and the Stratford Municipal Band, the selection. In the C section Eltham won the quickstep and the gold medal for drum major, Manaia the selection and Inglewood the aggregate. In the pipe section Eltham. won the quickstep and Hawera the selection. Regret was expressed that thre bands, Hawera Municipal, Hawera Auxiliary and Patea were unable owing to various causes to take part. Besides Mr. J. ,G. Osborne, N.1.8.8.A. secretary, there were present Mr. Patchett, executive members and Mr. H.A Bennett, president of the association, who commented on the excellent manner in which the contest had been carried out, and on the number of bands taking part. He mentioned that the successful outings of the Taranaki union had led other centres to run provincial contests. He looked forward to the time when the best band would be selected to represent the province at the championship contests.

During the year the presentation of a smoker’s stand (subscribed to by every band in the union) was made to the president, Mr. P. Skoglund, as a recognition of the service given by him to the union since its inception. The presentation was made by the patron, Mr., P. Thomson. ■

There were several remits from bands, also notices with reference to alteration of rules to be considered at the annual meeting. A matter that was left in abeyance by the executive was the arranging of solo and other competitions; this was to be again considered by the executive. .' ■ '

The thanks of the union were extended to Mr. McKay, chairman, and Mr. G. Peebles, secretary, and all the Eltham .contest committee, who all worked hard to ensure the . success of the contest. Tljanks were also extended to all the bands, the Railway Department for train arrangements, the Press and all who had in any way assisted the union.
