RELIEF WORKERS’ MEAT

MASTER BUTCHERS’ SCHEME. POSITION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Through the agency of the Self Help Club the Master Butchers’ Association of New Plymouth has made meat available .to relief workers at a very low price. Although the scheme is not in full swing, the first bi-weekly distributions amounted to 100 parcels of 51b each, about 30001 b in ail. The distribution to-day is expected to be about 5001 b.. The parcels are available at all butchers in the town, all that is necessary being a coupon from the Self-Help Club. In exchange for the coupon a parcel of meat, equivalent to the .sum .paid in at the Self Help Club, is given. The meat is of good quality, and the cost is about 50 per cent, lower than ‘ that of similar meat issued to an ordinary customer. The butchers are doing the cutting free of charge. The cattle are bought at ruling market prices, and the whole scheme is self-supporting, be-' tag independent of donations. Distributions of meat are made on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On Wednesday parcels of corned beef and small goods, and on Saturday roasts are available. , A New Plymouth butcher yesterday stressed the point that the scheme was not charity, those taking advantage of it being served in the same manner as other customers. Also, there was no central distributing depot, the meat being obtainable from all butchers in the town. It is understood the scheme will operate until an extension of the Unemployment Board’s scheme for the distribution of meat to relief workers at low prices comes into force.
