Though in a minor place both days at Wanganui Chopin ran two solid races and his rider on the big course here will not be so anxious to push him to the front so early. He would appear to hold Juggle safe at a difference of one pound. Takakua was an outstanding hack hut he has his full share of weight here and may find difficulty in conceding Lucky Alice two pounds as that mare won the Connolly Handicap in impressive fashion. Courtyard has improved of late but so have Fairway, Beacon Fire and Copper King, and this trio is going to give the topweights a deal of trouble. Speculation looks certain to take a wide range, but the best supported may be Beacon Fire, Lucky Alice and Chopin. HOPEFUL STAKES.

Few have much public form to recommend them, but Queen’s Diadem displayed a lot of pace in the final event at Wanganui and Tudor showed promise at Stratford. Vonia Park is another who runs prominently at times.

Grumpy, Foreign Queen and Right Bower ate also speedy over this distance, and in the possible absence of Good Hunting the best fancied may be Royal Hunting, Hunting Lodge and Grumpy.
