OPUNAKE PLUNKET BALL

SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL SUCCESS. BRIGHT SCENE IN TOWN HALL. The Opunake Plunket ball on Wednesday eclipsed all previous gatherings as a social and financial success. Not only did patrons receive a delightful entertainment but a profit of about £35 was also made for the funds of the Plunket Society. This was due to the great amount of organisation performed by the ladies’ committee with Mrs. J. A. Stevenson as president and Mrs. H. J. Mantey secretary. For some time the committee has been making preparations. The town hall had to be decorated and made attractive. With the aid of orange and black streamers radiating from the centre of the ceiling and a line of coloured lights and greenery around the walls this was effectively accomplished and the visitors remarked on the happy atmosphere created. Greenery and hydrangeas were used to set off the stage, while in the supper room similar colours were used and the tables were relieved with vases of autumn flowers. The electric lamps in both rooms were softly toned with orange shades, the lighting effects being very pleasing. Jack Hooker’s orchestra played popular dance numbers for both old-time and modem dances, and extras were contributed by Mrs. C. Malcolm and Mrs. Marsh. Messrs. C. Maindonald and T. Carey were the masters of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr. S. McGuinness and Miss J. Allan and a statue dance by Mr. J. Woolford and Mrs. C. Malcolm. A competition was won by Mr. E. L. Craighead. An excellent supper was donated by the residents and served by the ladies’ committee. At the conclusion Mr. C. O. Edmonds on behalf of the committee thanked all for assisting to make the function a success. The results were gratifying and a profit of over £35 would be shown.
