HAWERA ITEMS

Mrs. Livermore, Taihapa, is spending the week-end with Mrs. L. J. Bull. She will return home on Monday. Mrs. R. S. Allwright returned home last week-end from a visit to Wellington, where she was Mrs. Clarke’s guest Mrs- A. McWilliam has returned from New Plymouth, where she was staying with her mother, Mrs. Winfield. Miss Kidd, Richmond (Nelson), is the guest of Mrs. H. R. Kemp, Fairfield Road. Mr. and Mrs. John Plimmer, Wellington, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Bramwell, will return south by car to-morrow'. Mrs. A. Symes, Hawke’s Bay, has been staying with Mrs. Symes, South Road. Hostesses at bridge and, afternoon tea during the week were Mesdames C. Bayley, B. Stott and E. M. Bardsley. Miss Sheila Page, Melbourne, who has been spending a holiday with her aunt at Featherston, is at present the guest Of the Misses Buchanan, South Road. During the week Mr. Mackie gave an interesting lecturette to members of the garden circle, the subject being native shrubs, plants, fems, and alpines. Mrs. W. McL’Dowie, convener of the circle, introduced the speaker. About 25 members were present. Mrs. . Vaughan, Hastings, is visiting her daughter Mrs. G. W. Powdrell, Princes Street Extension. Mrs. W. Kaye, Inglewood, voluntary for the Taranaki Federation of Women’s Institutes, visited South Taranaki last week, staying with Mrs. T. J. Allan. Miss Vera Allan has returned from a holiday at Auckland, creaking her return journey at Hamilton, where she was the guest of Mrs.' D. Wallace, formerly of Hawera. Misses M. Hart and N. Airey, Lawrence, who have been the guests of Miss M. Franklin, left early in the week in the continuation of their North Island tour. Mrs. H. E. Nowell, Ngaere, is weedending at Hawera. She is the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Corrigan, at “The Oaks.” The Young Helpers’ League, Hawera branch, recently held a box opening at the scout hall, the afternoon being spent pleasantly with a programme of items given by the Tawhiti children and members of the league. The funds are collected for the upkeep of a “Hawera” cot in the Banardo Homes. Among those present were the president of the Hawera branch (Mrs. W. G. Strange), Mesdames R. Campbell, J. Houston, H. T. Lovell, McKinnon, J. B. Laurenson and W. G. Simpson (treasurer), Misses Gwen Purser (secretary), D. Corrigan, Nowell (2) (Ngaere) and Free. When Miss Sheila Lovell left for England she took with her a baby doll suitably dressed in “woollies” and undertook to visit the Banardo Homes at Barkinside and see the child occupying the “Hawera” cot. Miss Lovell duly made her visit and was much impressed with the “village of homes” at Barkinside, and the way in which this marvellous doctor philanthropist has completely overcome the “institution” idea. The little girl in the Hawera cot was presented with the doll from the Hawera Young Helpers’ League, and the members here are now anxiously awaiting Miss Lovell’s return to hear all about her visit and the little girl in their cot.

On Friday evening Mrs. W. J. Bright was hostess at a party for her daughter Anne and her young friends, Mrs. Bright wearing a smart green gown, while Miss Anne’s frock was fashioned in a full flowing style of forget-me-not blue organdie. Mrs. Gordon, Wanganui, Mrs. Bright’s house guest, wore black georgette. A pleasant time was spent in dancing and games. _ Those present were Misses Joan Quilliam (New Plymouth), Enid Gordon (Masterton), Mary Bright, M. Thomson, Jill Hunter, Barbara Thomson, June Joll, Muriel Ellis, Monda and Helen Collins, Mickey Hawken, Margaret Hill, Gwen Williams (Meremere), Margaret Tennent, Pat and Peggy Brown, Jocelyn Lennon and Peggy Hay-Mackenzie. Mrs. Henderson and Miss Mary Henderson, Melbourne, who have been staying with Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Bavin, left last week for Wellington and will leave on Tuesday’s boat on their return to Australia.

Miss Jill Hunter has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. D.'L. Bly th, Wanganui. On Monday afternoon Mrs. C. J. Hawken entertained a number of friends at tea. The hostess was attired in a navy georgette frock. Mesdames A. Symes (Hawke’s Bay), Symes, W. F. Buist, 0. K. Tennent, H. R. Kemp, A. Thomson ana H. Vernon, Misses Mary and Mickey Hawken, M. Bright, Symes, Enid Gordon (Masterton), E. Buist, Alison Kemp, M. Thomson, A. Bright jand Jocelyn Lennon were among the guests. A number of Miss Mary Bright’s friends arranged a surprise party, and arrived at her home, South Road, on Saturday evening ready for all sorts of fun. A happy evening of dancing and games ensued. Mrs. W. J. Brights gown was of black georgette .and lace, while Miss Mary wore a frock of powder pink organdie. Among the “surprisers” were Mrs. Elwyn Lloyd, Misses C. Tonks, Meg Kissling (Auckland), G. Goodson, Enid Gordon (Masterton), Pat Lovell, E. Buist, M. Black, Nancy Duckworth, B. Powdrell, K. Coleman, Mary Hawken, J. Powdrell, Mavis McKenzie, Daphne Mann (Stratford) and Sheila Page (Melbourne). . . V. A sitting room gay with bowls of nasturtiums, jardinieres of chrysanthemums and a bright and cheery fire was welcoming when Mrs. W. A. Duckworth entertained a number of friends at tea on Thursday afternoon. The hostess wore a smart floral frock. - Mesdames Symes, C. Tonks, L. Hamilton (Manutahi), A. G. Bennett (Manaia), C. D.
